Experts Weigh In: Predictions for IND vs. JAX Week 5 Showdown in Jacksonville

1005 FInal Analysis

JACKSONVILLE – Each week during the 2024 season, Jaguars "experts" – Tony Boselli, Frank Frangie, Jeff Lageman, Brent Martineau, John Oehser, Brian Sexton, J.P. Shadrick and Kainani Stevens – will analyze the following day's Jaguars matchup.

Up this week:

Tony Boselli, Jaguars Analyst and Former Jaguars Left Tackle

  • The Jaguars will win if: They can start fast and have a very effective running game. The Colts' defense is beat up and will give up the underneath stuff between the 20s. Lawrence needs to be patient, take what the defense gives him and then they need to score touchdowns when they get in the red zone.
  • The Colts will win if: They can pressure Lawrence and force some turnovers. The Colts are a beat up team on both sides of the ball, and who's playing quarterback probably will be a gametime decision. To get a division win on the road, they will need to steal a couple possessions
  • As Boselli sees it: The Jaguars are desperate to get their first win in 2024, and the weekend Tom Coughlin is going into the Pride of the Jaguars is a good time to do it...Jags 24 Colts 14.

Frank Frangie, Radio Voice of the Jaguars

  • The Jaguars will win if: They relax, quit pressing as much, play free and easy. They will be back home on a special day, so there should be great energy. They need to play better in the trenches and Lawrence needs to hit the open opportunities down the field. In essence, just clean up the misses. And if Richardson plays, the Jags need to keep him hemmed in and make him win from the pocket.
  • The Colts will win if: They score first and put even more pressure on the Jags, who are trying for their first victory. The Colts need to take away the run and make the Jags one-dimensional. Jacksonville has been a decent rushing team. And if Richarson plays, he needs to make some plays off schedule.
  • As Frangie sees it: The Colts haven't won in Jacksonville in 10 years. The Jags should win, but they have to find a level of confidence that could be missing. The early part of this game is critical.

Jeff Lageman, Jaguars Analyst and Former Jaguars Defensive End

  • The Jaguars will win if: Lawrence plays at a higher level. Over the first four weeks there have been opportunities missed and they must be captured for this team to get a win – and for Lawrence to avoid a tenth consecutive loss.
  • The Colts will win if: They win the turnover battle and run effectively. The Colts' offensive line is one of the better units in the NFL and can make whoever plays quarterback comfortable.
  • As Lageman sees it: There could not be a better time for this Jaguars team to play winning football. Many former Jaguar players, or "Legends," will be in town to celebrate Tom Coughlin's induction into the Pride of the Jaguars and there could not be a better way to honor him than playing winning football.

Brent Martineau, Action Sports Jax Sports Director

  • The Jaguars will win if: They finish in the red zone and Lawrence hits his layups. I think that's the last step for the Jaguars to get their point total where it needs to be for a win. A goal-to-go situation last week cost them the game. Lawrence had an off day and missed too many chances. The Jaguars have lost too many times the last ten months because they've missed plays that are there to be made.
  • The Colts will win if: They can win the turnover margin. The one thing the Jaguars have done very well is hold onto the football in the first month of the season. Usually, that's a recipe to win, but not for the Jaguars. They might be due for some turnovers and the Colts are opportunistic in that category.
  • As Martineau sees it: Happy October and it will get off to a happy start for the Jaguars. I like the trend of the Jaguars beating the Colts at home. The bigger reason I like the Jaguars is they are due, and Lawrence plays well against the Colts. The Jags are too good to keep losing these kinds of games, especially at home. It's the last chance to flip this season around in my opinion and the Jaguars will win, 27-16.

John Oehser, jaguars.com Senior Writer

  • The Jaguars will win if: Lawrence hits plays when they're there, and if the Jaguars force turnovers. The Jaguars' offense must stay patient against a Colts defense designed to stop the big play. As much focus as there has been on the Jaguars' offense, the fact that the defense has no takeaways is significant. It's hard to win in the NFL not forcing turnovers.
  • The Colts will win if: The offensive line controls the Jaguars' front seven. If the Colts run effectively and protect whoever plays quarterback, they will control the tempo and tone of the game. That could frustrate a Jaguars team that hasn't been resilient this season.
  • As Oehser sees it: The Jaguars should be in this game late. They have been in three of four games this season late, with the difference being their inability to make big plays. The thought here is they break through this week, but they need a big play or two in big moments.

Brian Sexton, jaguars.com Senior Correspondent

  • The Jaguars will win if: Quarterback Trevor Lawrence breaks free of his recent struggles. They also must control the line of scrimmage on defense against one of the best offensive lines in the league. The Jaguars have a big, powerful defensive front that we believed would be the strength of the team when training camp ended. The group still might be. Sunday afternoon against Indianapolis would seem to be the perfect time to show that.
  • The Colts will win if: They can keep a frustrated team second guessing itself. I have a high opinion of the talent on the Jaguars roster, even at 0-4. I don't think they're a mentally tough team. They haven't overcome any adversity since last September when they went to London 1-2 and came home 3-2. They've lost nine of their last 10 games and – dating back to January – five in a row. If the Colts get off to a fast start it will be interesting to see if this is the week the Jaguars overcome.
  • As Sexton sees it: The Jaguars are due for something good to happen. I thought that was the case early last Sunday when the Jaguars recovered a muffed punt in Houston and turned it into a touchdown. So, I guess they're due for something good to happen in the fourth quarter. The Colts aren't among the AFC elite and they have injury issues of their own so I will lean towards the home team getting its first win of the season.

J.P. Shadrick, jaguars.com Senior Reporter

  • The Jaguars will win if: The simple is made to look simple. Open passes must be completed. Everything still looks slow developing for this group. Find a rhythm. Build early confidence. These are vague ideas, but you'll know it when you see it – and we only saw a glimpse of it in the first half in Miami Week 1. Patience is key this week against the Gus Bradley defense of the Colts, and driving the field and executing consistently for 9-, 10-, 11-, 12-play drives will be the difference.
  • The Colts will win if: They get the running game going, no matter the quarterback. If Anthony Richardson is in, then it's the read option, mobile QB game with a cannon for an arm that can throw it 60 yards in the air while fading away. If Joe Flacco is in, he has the veteran savvy to pick defenses apart if they fill the box with an extra defender to slow the run. Watch the Jaguars-Browns tape from last season. Actually, don't.
  • As Shadrick sees it: Since 1990 – and entering 2024 – 105 NFL teams have started 0-4. The only one to make the playoffs was the 1992 San Diego Chargers. The quarterback of that team was Stan Humphries, a sixth-round pick by the Washington Redskins in 1988 out of Northeast Louisiana, where he was an All-America selection for the I-AA National Champs in 1987. Also on that Northeast Louisiana roster was a baby-faced freshman quarterback – a kid from Bellingham, Wash. – named Doug Pederson. Is there a connection? No, but I just like that story. Can the Jags channel some Head Coach Bobby Ross/Humphries/LB Junior Seau energy this week and the rest of the season?

Kainani Stevens, Jaguars team reporter

  • The Jaguars will win if: They play to their strengths and don't let the outside noise affect them. This team is winless but did a lot of good things last week in Houston. If they stick to the program this week, I think they should be able to handily beat a depleted roster.
  • The Colts will win if: Flacco gets the start and keeps the game close until the fourth quarter. Flacco shredded this Jaguars defense last season when he was with the Browns, and he has the ability to do it again this Sunday if he plays.
  • As Stevens sees it: Injuries will play a big role on both sides this week, including a few likely game time decisions. I expect the Jaguars to play with some pride on a historic day for the franchise and also get their first win of the season.
