Show Up and Play Hard: Common Theme in the Final Analysis of Jaguars vs. Raiders

W16 FINAL ANALYSIS

JACKSONVILLE – Each week during the 2024 season, Jaguars "experts" – Frank Frangie, Jeff Lageman, Brent Martineau, John Oehser, Brian Sexton, J.P. Shadrick and Kainani Stevens – will analyze the following day's Jaguars matchup.

Up this week:

Frank Frangie, Radio Voice of the Jaguars

  • The Jaguars will win if: They continue to target Brian Thomas Jr. and find the same offensive rhythm they had a week ago. But they have to prevent big plays, the kind that was their undoing a week ago. Mac Jones has found a bit of a groove, but he has to stay from the big, late game mistakes.
  • The Raiders will win if*:* They can force some Jaguars mistakes and take care of the ball themselves. They also have to clean up what has been sloppy special teams, particularly last week.
  • As Frangie sees it*:* This is two struggling teams, both with backup quarterbacks. But I think the Jags have the better of the two teams here. And they played with great energy a week ago. If they play with that energy this week, they will win the game.

Jeff Lageman, Jaguars Analyst and Former Jaguars Defensive End

  • As Lageman sees it: The Jaguars will win if they continue to get Brian Thomas Jr the ball. BTJ is the best player the Jags have on the field and by far the one guy that seems to spark the team like no other.
  • The Raiders will win if: They can force three takeaways and give extra opportunities to their struggling offense. Vegas does not run the ball well and has inconsistency at the quarterback position and needs all the help it can get.
  • As Lageman sees it: This game doesn't generate much interest unless you're a diehard fan but two talented rookies are what makes this game a worthy watch in my opinion. Brian Thomas Jr and Brock Bowers are two top end rookies that are both inching to 1,000 yards receiving and other milestones that are very impressive. Get your popcorn ready for these two to rewrite some records.

Brent Martineau, Action Sports Jax Sports Director

  • The Jaguars will win if: They hit the 20-point milestone again. The Jaguars offense looked a lot better last Sunday, but the defense couldn't hold the Jets. I think 20 points is enough over this beat-up Raiders team. The offensive line is playing pretty good football overall and will have a chance to control this game too.
  • The Raiders will win if: They hit on a trick play, or special teams play. This is the time of year teams will throw caution to the wind. The Jaguars surrendered a fake punt last week against the Jets. Las Vegas will have to steal a possession or hit on an unusual play to beat the Jaguars this afternoon.
  • As Martineau sees it: It's hard to say the Jaguars are a lot better than anyone right now, but there's a lot more to like about the Jags than the Raiders in this one. Las Vegas wasn't that great to begin the season and now they have lost a lot of players due to injury. The Jags have their own injuries, but their replacements have now settled into a routine. I think the Jags win and it's not that close. Jags get win number four with a 24-13 victory.

John Oehser, jaguars.com Senior Writer

  • The Jaguars will win if: They start fast and quarterback Mac Jones avoids key turnovers. The Jaguars' offense has shown some life in recent weeks with a heavy emphasis on rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. They must continue in that vein.
  • The Raiders will win if: The play with the same heart and desire they have shown in recent weeks. These are two teams that have played with professionalism and pride lately. The team that shows the most on Sunday could be the
  • As Oehser sees it: This is a game the Jaguars should win. The concern: They're traveling to the West Coast at the end of a long, disappointing season. If they're asleep and unmotivated, these sort of games can be trouble

Brian Sexton, jaguars.com Senior Correspondent

  • The Jaguars will win if: They show up and play as hard as they did the last few weeks. The Raiders are not very good at quarterback, and their defense has lost its best player and most dangerous pass rusher. They have won one fewer game than the Jaguars, but without a quarterback to build around it feels as if they're worse off. If the Jaguars show up to play with great energy and desire as they did against the Jets last Sunday they should win.
  • The Raiders will win if: The Jaguars are too focused on Christmas and a trip to Vegas. If theydon't show up with a businesslike approach, the Raiders can take advantage of the opportunity and steal a win. Rookie tight end Brock Bowers is having a great season on a bad team.
  • As Sexton sees it: This is a great chance for the Jaguars to get their fourth win of the season. The Raiders have lost ten consecutive games. They don't have a strong running game, and the heartbeat of their defense went on injured reserve this week. The Jaguars get their fourth win of the season and back-to-back road wins, which is always nice – especially with a long flight home.

J.P. Shadrick, jaguars.com Senior Reporter

  • The Jaguars will win if: They do not give up ridiculous blown-coverage explosive plays, especially in key moments late in a tight game. In many ways it's the story of the season for the Jaguars, who have lost so many one-score games this season I'll have to take my shoes off soon to count.
  • The Raiders will win if: They find some early momentum and stay in the game in the fourth quarter. Monday night they hung around a Falcons team that didn't put them away and had two throws into the end zone at the end with a chance to win.
  • As Shadrick sees it: The Jaguars are bad, but the Raiders are worse. The Raiders have lost 10 straight games, and have quarterback questions and their best player, defensive end Maxx Crosby, is done for the year due to injury. The Jaguars have lost six of seven games since London, and have injury issues on offense with a defense that cannot stop blowing coverages. The Jaguars have clearly been in games against any level of opponent, and this should be another close one down to the end. Can the Jaguars finish?

Kainani Stevens, Jaguars Team Reporter

  • The Jaguars will win if: They feed Brian Thomas Jr. Last week we saw a breakout game for Thomas and there's no reason to stray away from that formula now. Feed him the ball.
  • The Raiders will win if: They feed Brock Bowers. Sensing a theme? These two rookie pass catchers have been the highlights for their respective teams in disappointing seasons. The Jaguars have trouble covering tight ends and Bowers is already among the top at his position.
  • As Stevens sees it: Whichever team has competent quarterback play will win this game. I think Mac Jones is getting more comfortable by the week and I think he will give the Jags a good shot at the win on Sunday. Would be good to leave Vegas as a winner for the long flight home.
