JACKSONVILLE – He's getting healthy, which matters a lot.
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence also likes what's happening around the Jaguars these days – which matters as much for the long-term as his return from shoulder surgery matters in the short-term. Most immediately:
Lawrence has work to do this offseason, and he's able to do that work.
"I'm getting there, which feels really good," he said.
Lawrence, entering his fifth season as the Jaguars' starting quarterback, spoke to the media Wednesday afternoon as the 2025 offseason program begins at the Miller Electric Center. Topics were many, including focusing on footwork as he learns first-year Head Coach Liam Coen’s offense – and Coen said he likes what he has seen from Lawrence early.
"Everything's moving forward," Coen said Wednesday. "He feels really good right now. We're optimistic that we'll get there in terms of where we need to go."
Lawrence, who underwent surgery on his left – non-throwing – shoulder December 18, said he is able to work out and throw as the voluntary offseason program begins. When he spoke to the media Wednesday, he was no longer wearing a shoulder brace.
Coen said Lawrence will be on a "pitch count" as the offseason moves forward, with Lawrence saying there's not really a "set deadline" on returning to full participation "just because we don't play a game until this fall."
"Obviously, I'm going to be ready sooner than that, so I'm very optimistic I'll be perfectly good for the season," Lawrence said, adding that the plan is to keep "pacing ourselves" as organized team activities – the 11-on-11, on-field portion of the offseason – approach in mid-May.
"The amount of throws might be a little lighter to start and work our way up just until I get really fully back," Lawrence said. "I think that won't last too long."
Lawrence added that he currently is throwing and "kind of progressing and working my way up, further distance, more throws. Just trying to be smart and not just jump off into the deep end right away, just trying to work up to it."

Lawrence, who missed seven games with various injuries last season, also on Wednesday detailed his offseason focus on footwork. He said while he felt like the area has been "a little bit of a weakness," he said much of the reason for a heavy focus is the importance of footwork in Coen's offensive scheme.
"The system is built around timing and tying your feet to your progression, and playing on time," Lawrence said. "It allows you to get backside, it allows you to get to checkdowns or whatever it may be. It's structured and based on [footwork and timing].
"They've done a really good job with the system of really thinking through how does it tie into a quarterback's feet? That's what we've been talking about and it takes some work and flipping my stance, just some little things like that that are small that many people wouldn't notice.
"I have so many banked reps of the other way, I've got to just get all these on my own and work them. So once camp comes around, I'm ready to go."
Coen called the process more "tweaking" than major change.
"We are trying to create black and white lines when it comes to footwork," Coen said. "There's so much that occurs on a play, if you can have core fundamentals in footwork and that you believe in and that you trust, in those times of crisis, you have something to actually fall back on and play with a quieted mind."
Coen also called Lawrence being limited in terms of throwing a great opportunity.
"He can dive into it (footwork) on his own time and really work at this thing," Coen said. "He's committed to it. It's something that we feel strongly about that can help him continue to get better. Ultimately on Sundays, we hope that shows up.
"Now it's just about, 'OK, how do we finetune it and just tighten it up a little bit to get him in a place where he's comfortable to cut the ball loose on time and in rhythm regardless of the circumstances?' That's really what it comes down to."
And while Coen's will be Lawrence's third offensive scheme in five NFL seasons, Lawrence said that number matters less than how he feels about the new direction.
"I really believe in it; I believe in the process," Lawrence said. "It's early, but as far as what the main priorities are going to be for us and how they see the game, and our offense, what we want to build it around, all those things I'm in alignment with.
"I think I'm going to be able to play even faster and get through progressions and feel confident, and trust that."
