Jaguars HC Liam Coen Speaks on Culture, Administration and Players at Annual League Meeting

0331 Owners Meetings

PALM BEACH, Fla. – The work is ongoing, and the work is good.

Liam Coen met with the media Monday at the 2025 NFL Annual Meeting, with the first-year head coach speaking of a busy month in which the Jaguars improved the roster and continued moving into a new era.

It's about the future and the future is now.

"It's happening fast," Coen said.

Coen, speaking at the ’25 coaches’ breakfast at The Breakers Palm Beach, focused on multiple Jaguars-topics during 30 minutes with the media Monday. Surrounded by reporters and cameras, he discussed a roster that changed significantly in mid-March with the Jaguars signing 10 unrestricted free agents.

"At the end of the day, what we really look to do is try to continue to raise the floor of the organization," Coen said. "How do we continue to get better? Consistency, good sound football players that love to play the game – really, that's all we were trying to do.

"I think ultimately they'll come in and mesh really well with some of the players that we already have in our locker room."

Among the free agents signed:

  • Four offensive linemen

"These guys love to play the game," Coen said. "They love what it's about to be an O-lineman. That's kind of who they are at their core."

The Jaguars also last month signed Washington Commanders wide receiver Dyami Brown, Dallas Cowboys cornerback Jourdan Lewis, Los Angeles Rams tight end Hunter Long, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Nick Mullens, Vikings tight end Johnny Mundt and Houston Texans safety Eric Murray. Brown and Murray are expected to start, with Lewis starting at nickel corner and Long and Mundt playing key roles in the tight end rotation.

"I think we've done a nice job with being able to get to those players that'll help settle things in and be able to create that kind of balanced football flow that we're looking for," Coen said.

Coen, hired in January after spending last season as the Buccaneers' offensive coordinator, spent several weeks assembling a coaching staff. The Jaguars also since last season have hired James Gladstone as general manager and Tony Boselli as executive vice president of football operations.

"We've spent almost every waking minute together throughout the last few weeks, honestly," Coen said of Gladstone. "It's so easy to talk to him. He breaks things down to such an elite level of simplicity for me because he's a lot smarter than I am."

Because Coen is in his first season as head coach, the Jaguars can begin their offseason program April 7 – and Coen said players can expect "energy" when they report.

"That's the first thing we're really trying to place," Coen said. "It's just feel: 'Guys, this is good stuff. It's great to be back. We're doing football, guys. How many of us get to do this? We get an opportunity to do this every single day. There are so many that don't, so how are we going to approach this thing?' I think they'll walk into that kind of feeling.

"We'll just do meetings obviously throughout Phase I [of the offseason program], introducing our systems while we at the same time start to introduce our culture. The way that we're going to be, the way we're going to talk to each other, the way they're going to communicate with each other, how we're going to treat one another – that'll go hand in hand with the systems.

"It's just incrementally inputting the culture. It's not just culture overload on Day One when you're like – as a player, coach and staff – 'Man, that was way too much, this is a lot.' Culture is how we truly just are. How we talk to each other, how we hang out with each other, the way we hold meetings and gatherings together. It's just incrementally let's have these conversations about trying to do more of this [interlocking fingers] instead of this [separating fingers]. How do we connect closer?"

Coen said his conversations with Jaguars returning players have revealed a roster of players who "want to get better."

"We've felt that," he said. "We have felt that throughout this offseason. Guys are eager to get in the building as we are as coaches. We're really excited about the collaboration we have had with some of the drafts, some of the free agency and the current roster.

"Things are going pretty well so far."
