JACKSONVILLE – Each week during the 2024 season, Jaguars "experts" – Tony Boselli, Frank Frangie, Jeff Lageman, Brent Martineau, John Oehser, Brian Sexton, J.P. Shadrick and Kainani Stevens – will analyze the following day's Jaguars matchup.
Up this week:
Tony Boselli, Pro Football Hall of Famer, Former Jaguars Left Tackle and Jaguars Analyst
- The Jaguars will win if: They control the front seven of the Titans, especially Simmons and defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat. The Jags must run the ball to take pressure off Jones. Jaguars running backs Tank Bigsby and Travis Etienne Jr. need a total of at least 30 carries.
- The Titans will win if: Levis is comfortable in the pocket and Pollard has a big day on the ground. The Titans' offensive line has struggled protecting their quarterback, giving up eight sacks to the Houston Texans a couple weeks ago. They need Pollard to have a big day to take pressure off Levis and slow down the pass rush.
- As Boselli sees it: Nashville has been a tough place for the Jaguars to get a win and with the playoffs out of the picture for the 2024 season, this is all about playing for pride and being a professional. This will be a low-scoring affair and whoever wins the turnover margin wins the game.
Frank Frangie, Radio Voice of the Jaguars
- The Jaguars will win if: They match the Titans' physicality. Tennessee is also having a tough season, but the Titans still have good lines, particularly on defense. Jacksonville must run and find some balance. The good news is Jones found a bit of a rhythm late against Houston. Hopefully he can carry the momentum forward.
- The Titans will win if: Levis plays with more consistency. When he has played well, the Titans have been pretty good. But he has been up and down early in his career. The Titans also will win if they stuff the Jags at the line and keep the Jags behind the sticks. First and second down are critical in this game.
- As Frangie sees it: This will be a low-scoring game that will come down to the closing minutes. The Jags have seen their share of those. Hopefully this is the time they make the key plays down the stretch.
Jeff Lageman, Jaguars Analyst and Former Jaguars Defensive End
- The Jaguars will win if*:* They win the turnover battle. The Titans have turned the ball over 23 times this season, which is tied for most in the NFL with the Las Vegas Raiders. Extra opportunities and better field position always helps a team with a backup quarterback.
- The Titans will win if*:* Levis is comfortable as a passer. The Titans have struggled scoring this season and protection issues have been a major contributor to that. If Tennessee can run efficiently with Pollard and protect Levis it will make it tough for the Jaguars to force Levis into mistakes.
- As Lageman sees it: This will be a game of "want." Which team wants it the most when the postseason dreams are gone or nearly gone. Which team wants to have some grit when it's easy to not have it. Which team wants to finish the season with pride. Want will be easy to see in a game such as this.
Brent Martineau, Action Sports Jax Sports Director
- The Jaguars will win i*f:* They win the turnover battle and time of possession, areas where the Jaguars have shown little consistency. It's hard to win right now in Jacksonville, but controlling the time of possession and creating a couple of takeaways could snap the streak against an average Titans team.
- The Titans will win if: Levis continues to ascend. He is playing better the last month and seems to be settling in overall. If he hangs onto the football and has success in the passing game, the Jaguars are in trouble in Nashville.
- As Martineau sees it: I thought the Jaguars were going to go on a late-season run starting last week. I was wrong and continue to be wrong about this team's ability to win. Sure, they can beat the Titans but there's little belief in Jacksonville right now the scoreboard will fall in their favor. I'll take the Titans 20-16.
John Oehser, jaguars.com Senior Writer
- The Jaguars will win if: They hit big plays and create turnovers. Jaguars quarterback Mac Jones likes the deep ball and figures to give rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. a chance at big plays. Titans quarterback Will Levis figures to give the Jaguars at least a few chances at interceptions.
- The Titans will win if: They control the game defensively. The Titans' defensive line is as good as any in the NFL, and the Jaguars typically struggle in short-yardage situations. That figures to be a meaningful matchup edge for Tennessee Sunday.
- As Oehser sees it: Levis is a young quarterback playing to solidify himself as the Titans' franchise player, and the Titans figure to be playing with an eye on the future under first-year Head Coach Brian Callahan. That figures to make them a motivated team Sunday. Can the Jaguars match that motivation at the end of a disappointing season?
Brian Sexton, jaguars.com Senior Correspondent
- The Jaguars will win if: They run and stop the run. That has always been the key to beating the Titans, which the Jaguars proved last January when did neither and lost in Nashville. Running back Derrick Henry is gone, but former Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Pollard is averaging4.3 yards per carry and is a threat out of the backfield as a receiver. The Jaguars must be able to run when they want to run and stop the Titans when they want to run to end a five-game losing streak.
- The Titans will win if: Their defensive line dominates. Jaguars Head Coach Doug Pederson said this week that the Titans' defensive line might be the best in the NFL, and Jeffery Simmons is as good a pure defensive tackle as there is in the game today. If the Titans control the line of scrimmage and keep the Jags' offense sputtering, the losing streak will continue.
- As Sexton sees it: The Jaguars will show up and fight in Nashville. They didn't do that last season and missed the opportunity to win back-to-back AFC South titles – and missed the playoffs entirely. I sensed that was an issue to a few key players this week and believe they'll be ready to go. Even without quarterback Trevor Lawrence, I think the Jaguars will end the five-game losing streak and claim a rare win in Nashville.
J.P. Shadrick, jaguars.com Senior Reporter
- The Jaguars will win if: They play offense all game like they did in the second half last week, and play defense all game like they did in the first half last week. Put that together for 60 minutes, and let's see what happens. It's Week 14, and we have only seen two winning performances this year no matter the personnel on the field.
- The Titans will win if: They dominate the line of scrimmage with their big, nasty defensive linemen, and if Levis has time to work. This is a trenches game. It's must-win up front on both sides of the ball for the Jags or they will get pushed around.
- As Shadrick sees it: This is a lost season and a complete embarrassment after so much promise and investment into the personnel entering 2024. There are five games remaining, and players and coaches will play and coach to win like they should, but major decisions from this point forward should be to bolster the organization for success in future seasons.
Kainani Stevens, Jaguars Team Reporter
- The Jaguars will win if: They force turnovers, and Jones can pick up where he left off against the Texans. Jones looked capable for the first time this season when he came on in relief of Trevor Lawrence last week against Houston. His chemistry with second-year wide receiver Parker Washington was a highlight. The Jags need to score to win and that lies squarely on Mac Jones' shoulders. Forcing a few turnovers on defense wouldn't hurt, either.
- The Titans will win if: They dominate the trenches. Line play has been a major issue for Jacksonville this season and the Titans have some big, physical players on the defensive line. The Titans can stop the run and make the Jaguars offense become one-dimensional. Without a running game, we've all seen how that story ends for the Jags.
- As Stevens sees it: I'm hopeful for a competitive performance on the road, in a tough environment, against a divisional opponent. I'm holding out hope for at least a couple more wins this season so why not start this week?
