JACKSONVILLE – Five things to know about new Jaguars defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile.
1. He coordinated one of the NFL's best run defenses in 2024. Campanile, a 19-year coaching veteran, spent the 2024 season with the Green Bay Packers as linebackers coach and run-game coordinator. The Packers ranked seventh in the NFL in '24 in run defense (99.35 yards per game) and third in yards per rush (4.0 yards). They ranked sixth in the NFL in points allowed in '24 (19.9) and fifth in yards allowed (314.5).
2. He's considered a top, rising young coach. Campanile, 42, has advanced quickly in five NFL seasons. He entered the league as a linebackers coach with the Miami Dolphins, spent two seasons (2020-2021) under then-Head Coach Brian Flores and remained on staff two seasons (2022-2023) under current Head Coach Mike McDaniel. He moved to the Packers in the 2024 offseason after interviewing for the New York Giants' defensive coordinator position, and he worked this past season with rookie linebacker Edgerrin Cooper – a Pro Football Writers of America All-Rookie selection in 2024. Campanile coached this past season under Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley. "I have a huge amount of respect for him as a coach, his knowledge, how hard he coaches, his intensity but more importantly as a person," Hafley told Bill Huber of ON SI late this past season. Campanile coached eight seasons in college: Michigan (linebackers, 2019); Boston College (co-defensive coordinator/defensive backs, 2018; defensive backs, 2016–2017); and Rutgers (wide receivers, 2015; tight ends, 2013-2014; defensive assistant, 2012-2013).
3. He has been around success – and there's sort of a McVay connection. Campanile has an impressive resume. He worked in Miami under Flores and McDaniel, considered among the NFL's better young defensive and offensive coaches, respectively. He also spent this past season working with Packers Head Coach Matt LeFleur, who – like Jaguars Head Coach Liam Coen – has worked under Los Angeles Rams Head Coach Sean McVay. Campanile never has coached an NFL losing season. The Dolphins went 10-6 (2020), 9-8 (2021), 9-8 (2022) and 11-6 (2023) in his four seasons there with postseason appearances in 2022 and 2023. The Packers went 11-6 with a postseason appearance this past season.
4. He believes in discipline, work and preparation. This from Campanile via Huber late in the season: "I firmly believe that there's a progression each play – your eyes, your feet, your hands – and then there has to be a violent finish. That's how every football play should start and end. If your eyes are right, your feet will be right, you'll get there and your hands will buy you time. That's some of the fundamental things about defending the run. Those are essential. Your body position, where your feet are, not compromising your base, playing with great hands and technique, pad level. Some people talk about those things, but you have to drill those things every day, almost like to the point where it's a martial art."
5. He's a Jersey guy – and from an extensive coaching family. A native of Fairlawn, N.J., Campanile played at Fairlawn High School before playing collegiately at Rutgers. He coached linebackers at Fairlawn in 2006 and was the defensive coordinator at Don Bosco (N.J.) Prep in 2007-2009 and offensive coordinator at Don Bosco in 2010-2011 before beginning his college coaching career at Rutgers in 2012. Anthony's father, Mike, coached at Paramus Catholic High School in New Jersey. Anthony's brother, Nunzio, is the quarterbacks coach at Syracuse. His other brother, Nicky, is the head coach at DePaul Catholic High School.
