JACKSONVILLE – The tough times continue. So does the perseverance.
Travis Etienne Jr. said that remains true – and that it will remain true as a disappointing 2024 Jaguars season moves into the final three weeks. Yes, the season is rough.
That doesn't mean the Jaguars have quit.
"We keep learning lessons this year, but we're going to figure it out," Etienne said as the Jaguars (3-11) prepared to play the Las Vegas Raiders (2-12) at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev., Sunday.
Etienne, the Jaguars' fourth-year running back, spoke to the media in the wake of a 32-25 loss to the New York Jets this past Sunday – the latest tight loss in a frustrating season in which the Jaguars repeatedly have faced adversity.
Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell, like Etienne a fourth-year veteran and locker room leader, said the key now is obvious: How the Jaguars respond.
"You just try to fuel it into positive energy and into your prep preparation for the next week," Campbell said. "In this league, it's any given Sunday. You can only control what you can control. You stand strong in your faith, be where your feet are.
"You just lean on your teammates, lean on your team and realize that you get out of the storm eventually."
The Jaguars, after back-to-back 9-8 seasons that included an AFC South title in 2022 and a division runner-up finish in in 2023, went 0-4 to start the 2024 season and won two of three games before losing five consecutive games.
A 23-20 loss to the Houston Texans on December 1 dropped them to 2-10 and eliminated them from playoff contention with five games remaining.
Campbell said the goal now is "just finish strong."
"We have three games left, so it's making sure we take it one game at a time," Campbell said. "We have to just try to go 3-0, but go 1-0 each week. We just have to finish strong, finish on a positive note and just play for my brothers.
"This is a blessing, and I just want to do it the best way I can. I'm not taking that for granted."
The loss to the Jets Sunday in a sense mirrored the season. The Jaguars, after leading at halftime and early in the fourth quarter, allowed a slew of explosive pass plays late. Jets wide receiver Davante Adams caught eight passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns – all in the second half – and that total included four fourth-quarter receptions for 139 yards and a touchdown.
The loss marked the Jaguars' eighth loss of the season by seven points or less, with Etienne calling the season "very challenging."
"We all know this season is not the way we want it to go, but we still don't lose those dreams about being a Super Bowl team," Etienne said. "We know in order to get there, we're going to have to win games like this in the future. The best teacher is experience. If we keep getting enough of these, we're finally going to hit that flip that switch, then we'll figure it out. Then we'll be the team winning a bunch of one-score games.
"This experience is going to help us in that area."
Etienne said the idea now is "just continue to play the game the right way."
"I just go out there and try to be my best self each and every week weekend for my team, just go out there and put great things on tape and try to be the best running back I can be for the team," Etienne said. "That is the mindset I try to instill in the guys right now. I definitely feel like it's going to get greater later, but we just have to continue to stay resilient."
Campbell said he expects the Jaguars to do just that, and said he expects the final three games to reflect a locker room that has remained unified in difficult circumstances.
"It just shows how close we are," Campbell said. "We've been going at it since late July. We're a tight-knit group. We want to finish what we started. We just have a passion to play for the guy next to us, and that fuels us going in week in and week out.
"Your reputation is the last game you've played. If we finish strong, then that'll be the last taste in our mouth, victory. That's something you look forward to bringing into the next season. That's the reason we want finish strong, just bring that positive energy going into the next season."
