Jaguars QB Trevor Lawrence Improving Week After Wek in the 2024 Season

1023 Lawrence Presser Recap

JACKSONVILLE – Another week, another step forward.

He's protecting the ball and throwing accurately. He's hitting deep passes consistently, making big plays – and most importantly to quarterback Trevor Lawrence – the Jaguars in recent weeks are winning more than they're losing.

That has made for a good few weeks – and a good feeling as the Jaguars return to Jacksonville.

"I definitely feel like I've played better," he said.

Lawrence, who has thrown nine touchdowns with three interceptions this season, has completed 66 of 89 passes (74.16 percent) for 798 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions in the last three games. He completed 65 of 122 (53.28 percent) for 729 yards with four touchdowns and an interception in the first four games.

"From an individual perspective, I think I've played better the last few weeks," Lawrence said. "There is some correlation between that and the completion percentage being up. I think some of our plans the last couple weeks have been really good.

"I feel like I've been seeing it great. I feel like I've been pretty accurate the last few weeks, corrected a couple things, and I also feel like as an offense we're kind of settling in and it's just been going a little bit smoother, so it's been good."

Jaguars wide receiver Christian Kirk said Lawrence's recent performance is hardly surprising.

"That's expected from him," Kirk said. "He's always been that player. Even through times of adversity, he has always been that player. I continue to say it: 'We'll go as far as he takes us.' When he's at his best, we're really good and hard to beat.

"It's great to see him playing the way he is and I know he'll continue to do that. If he does, we'll be in a good position to be able to win football games."

A particular area of improvement for Lawrence this season: Reducing turnovers, a major offseason focus.

Lawrence through seven games this season has three giveaways – three interceptions and no lost fumbles. He led the NFL in giveaways in his first three seasons with 60 – 21 lost fumbles and 39 interceptions.

"It's something that has been on my mind, take care of the ball in the pocket and out in space running with it," Lawrence said. "Playing quarterback, you're going to have interceptions at some point. You want to limit them, you want to make good decisions and you want to be accurate, but you throw the ball a lot in this league and at some point you're probably going to throw an interception. It's all about limiting those.

"As far as the fumbles, the first few years of my career, I've had some problems in the pocket and out in space, so that's something that I've looked at and addressed. It's something that has to be on your mind – not necessarily worried about it, but just a focus.

"It's just something I've worked on and it's paid off for me so far, so just got to keep doing that and you can't lose focus. You have to emphasize it every week because every defense you play, that's their goal is to get the ball."

NOTABLE

  • Jaguars safety Andrew Wingard (knee) and linebacker Foyesade Oluokun (foot) practiced limited Wednesday, one day after the team opened their 21-day practice window. Both players are on the injured reserve/designated to return list, with Wingard out since training camp and Oluokun out since a Week 3 loss to the Buffalo Bills. Pederson called the duo's chances of playing Sunday "good" and added, "It means that we've opened their window and they can practice now with the team and not on the side with the trainer. We'll see each day how they do, how they get back out there and do more football movement and then if it looks good, great. If not, we go another week and see next week."

NOTABLE

  • Pederson said Oluokun and second-year veteran Ventrell Miller could be the primary linebackers upon Oluokun's return. Oluokun and Devin Lloyd – the No. 27 overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft – started in Weeks 1-3, with Miller and third-year veteran Chad Muma starting a Week 4 loss to the Houston Texans. Miller, a fourth-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, and Lloyd have started the last three games. "I would say short answer is, 'Yes,'" Pederson said. "I think too, you want your best 11 on the field, whatever that looks like. Sometimes, it doesn't necessarily have to be the best football player, but the one that does things right the most. I do still think that there's enough of a rotational piece with those guys. I think that's one of the positions that has gotten better these last couple of weeks. It has been the linebacker. I think Devin in the middle has gotten better. Ventrell, we know he has improved. Now, with the addition of Foye coming back, if he's ready to go, I think you have your combinations back that you want." Oluokun on Wednesday called Miller's play "electric" and added, "He's getting to the ball. We call him, 'missile.' The energy he brings is contagious. He's a bright spot, for sure. I'm going to enjoy continuing to teach him and playing alongside of him."
