Bye Week Refresh: HC Doug Pederson Confirms In-House Changes and Lawrence Practicing

1125 Monday Insider

JACKSONVILLE – The watching and waiting continues.

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence returned to practice Monday, with Head Coach Doug Pederson saying Lawrence's status for Sunday will be determined as the week continues.

"We'll see where he's at from there," Pederson said.

Lawrence, after starting the first 11 games of the 2024 regular season, missed the team's last two games – both losses – before this past weekend's Week 12 bye. He sustained a left – non-throwing – shoulder injury in a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 9.

"It will be a [pain] toleration thing," Pederson said Monday. "I want to see how he feels. He's feeling better today, so that's a positive."

The Jaguars lost the last four games entering the bye, with all losses coming to NFC contenders. They lost the final game before the bye to the Detroit Lions, 52-6 – the widest margin of defeat in the Jaguars' 30 seasons.

"I'm not going to get into the whole details of things, but there are things in the run game that we have to get back to," Pederson said. "Even in the passing game, tweaking some things there. There are things that can hopefully help our production over the last six weeks."

Pederson, after saying last week that "everything's on the table" when it comes to possible changes, was asked the team indeed is making changes.

"Yes," he said, adding that the changes were "nothing that I'll share at this time."

Pederson clarified the statement and added that a lot of the changes "are in-house."

"These are things we focus on as a staff and as a team, and I just don't think they need to be in the open right now," Pederson said.

The Jaguars in the last two weeks before the bye registered their two worst offensive performances of the season, producing 143 yards in a 12-7 loss to the Minnesota Vikings and 170 in the loss to the Lions. Backup quarterback Mac Jones started for Lawrence in those two games, completing 31 of 51 passes for 249 yards and no touchdowns with three interceptions and a lost fumble.

They're averaging 176 yards in their last three games.

"We have to keep working," Pederson said. "We have to keep trying as a staff to put our players in position to make plays on the field then – ultimately – the players execute the game plan. Last week was about trying to find ways to do that.

"We're going to implement some things and really kind of get back to some things that have been successful for us. Whether it's rhythm, tempo, whatever … to try to get things going.

"We have focus as a staff, as players, and just continue to do our jobs."

Pederson said he planned to take the same approach with what he told the team Monday as they returned for the final six games of the regular season.

"I'm going to keep all that messaging in-house," he said. "I just don't think that's something that needs to be out there. It's just between me and the players."

NOTABLE

  • Linebacker Yasir Abdullah (hamstring) was the lone Jaguars player not practicing Monday, Pederson said.

QUOTABLE

  • Pederson on taking a positive approach despite a 2-9 record: "It can be a challenge if you let it.Each day I walk into this building, I choose not to let it get me down. I choose to be energetic around the football team. I choose a message each week that I feel is important that the guys need to hear, that applies to keys to victory, and different things that we do throughout the course of the week – things we talk about as a team as the week progresses. I know there's a lot of negativity around us, and rightfully so. We understand that. Around me, I understand that. I choose not to listen to it and I choose to go the other way and be positive, because you only get so many days and so many opportunities in this league, and then your days are done. When they're done, you look back and you go, 'Hey, I gave it everything I had – to these players, to this team, to this league.' That's what I choose. I choose to go out every single day and try to make a difference for this team."
