Mock draft, v1.0: Jaguars select …

20160222-MockDraft.jpg

JACKSONVILLE – It's still early, but it's probably time.

When it comes to this first jaguars.com 2016 mock draft, keep this in mind, too: This is a guess.

It is only a guess.

Realistically, it may not be an accurate one, but as we prepare for this week's 2016 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana, it feels past overdue for the jaguars.com 2016 mock draft, version 1.0. So, the early unscientific projection here – two days before the combine and 65 lo-oo-oo-ooog days until the April 28-30 2016 NFL Draft – is the Jaguars' selection at No. 5 overall will be …

Jalen Ramsey, cornerback/safety, Florida State University.

Maybe.

There are a few reasons for projecting Ramsey to the Jaguars. One is that the team has a need at free safety, and another is that Ramsey is versatile enough to play both free safety and corner. If the Jaguars are successful in finding a free safety in free agency and Ramsey is available, he could play corner early in his career and safety later. Or he could move there quickly if the starter there is injured/ineffective.

Another reason to select Ramsey is that fewer and fewer mock drafts lately are projecting him to the Jaguars. Most believe he won't make it past San Diego at No. 3 and that Ohio State edge rusher could be the Jaguars' selection. Yeah, we could go with Bosa here, but that would be following the pack.

And where's the fun in that?

So, for now – and perhaps for now only – the projection is Ramsey.

Maybe. And maybe not. We'll see.
