JACKSONVILLE – The closer it gets, the more things stay the same.
When it comes to analysts assessing the Jaguars, the leadup to the 2021 NFL Draft has had a couple of prominent themes – most notably the feeling about the No. 1 overall selection. Analysts unanimously have projected Clemson University quarterback Trevor Lawrence to the Jaguars there, which remained the case in this week's 13th 2021 jaguars.com mock draft tracker.
Here's a look at what analysts wrote about the selection this week:
Steve Palazzolo, Pro Football Focus: "This pick has been locked in for a while, but the Jaguars still get what many call one of the best quarterback prospects of all time."
*Nate Davis, USA Today: "Legitimate case to be made this is the least-suspenseful selection in NFL draft history."
*Charley Casserly, NFL.com: "Urban Meyer selects his franchise quarterback to build around for years to come."
*Charles Davis, NFL Media: "New head coach Urban Meyer implements his vision for the team with the top QB in the draft."
*Chris Trapasso, CBS Sports: "Lawrence is the best quarterback prospect ever, so yeah, the Jaguars are picking him here."
*Rob Rang, Fox Sports: "Literally heads and shoulders above the rest of an exceptional quarterback class, Lawrence has all of the traits to transform Jacksonville into a contender. Perhaps best of all, he is an ideal fit in Urban Meyer's scheme."
The other overriding theme around the Jaguars in the '21 draft has been analysts increasingly focusing on a handful of players at No. 25, with one of those players – Trevon Moehrig – again a popular projection this week.
Moehrig, a safety from Texas Christian, was the projection there for five of 11 analysts featured in this week's tracker.
"The Jaguars select a savvy back-end defender who can play high, drop down in the box and cover in the slot," Davis of NFL Media wrote, with Sikkema calling Moehrig "the top safety to choose from in this class.
NFL.com's Charley Casserly – formerly general manager of the Washington Football Team and the Houston Texans – was one of two analysts projecting Penn State tight end Pat Freiermuth to the Jaguars at No. 25 in this week's tracker.
"Now that the Jaguars have their franchise QB, they address the other offensive need not filled in free agency," Casserly wrote.
Other projections to the Jaguars at No. 25 this week: Mississippi wide receiver Elijah Moore, Miami edge defender Gregory Rousseau, Virginia Tech cornerback Caleb Farley and Purdue wide receiver Rondale Moore.
"Would Urban Meyer be able to pass on Rondale here? No way," Trapasso wrote.
