JACKSONVILLE – The idea is to be as one.
Tony Boselli on Monday was named the Jaguars' executive vice president of football operations – and if there was a theme that stood out when he discussed that role, that was it:
This is a move about winning. And to win, there must be alignment.
"We're all in this together," Boselli said. "We're going to be aligned. It's going to be one voice. We're going to move forward with that attitude and that culture."
Boselli, the first player enshrined in the Pride of the Jaguars and the franchise's first Pro Football Hall of Famer, discussed multiple Jaguars-related issues when speaking to the media Monday and he emphasized his support for Head Coach Liam Coen.
That support, Boselli said, is Priority No. 1.
"My job is supporting Liam and his staff so that they can go do their job at the highest level," Boselli said.
Boselli, who was involved in the team's search for a head coach last month, called Coen "a heck of a ball coach."
Coen, 39, spent last season as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offensive coordinator. The Buccaneers were the only team to rank in the Top 5 in the NFL in passing and rushing offense in 2024.
"Just go watch what he did in Tampa with that offense," Boselli said. "There's no doubt in my mind he's a great ball coach. We want to make sure there's no distractions, nothing that him, his staff or his players have to worry about except for winning football games."
Boselli on Monday also discussed in detail the collaborative approach of he, Coen and the team's next general manager. Owner Shad Khan said last week he expects to hire a general manager by the end of the month, with the team having parted ways on January 22 with former General Manager Trent Baalke.
"There's going to be conflict and conflict's good – healthy conflict, healthy confrontation," he said. "I don't think you want leaders to all agree on every decision. You want them talking back and forth and pushing each other and challenging each other. That's good.
"The key is, once the decision is made, whatever that decision is, we're all in it together. It's our decision at that point. Once the decision's made, then we move forward with one voice behind the scenes. I want to be around strong leaders who have strong opinions, but at the same time, when we make a decision and we move forward with that decision, we are all in it together."
Boselli, 52, in addition to working in various capacities with the Jaguars since retiring from the NFL has worked in various businesses. He most recently served as president/chief growth officer for all.health, previously serving as vice president of transformation growth for prominent healthcare company Optum.
"I think a lot of my life has prepared me for this moment – playing football, loving football, understanding what it takes to win, being on winning teams, being in the business world," he said. "I learned a lot from that. I really feel like God has taken me through quite a journey and has given me opportunities to be around a lot of great people, a lot of really smart people, both in the football side and in the business world.
"It's a lot of different life experiences I've been through – some good, some bad, but all for the right purpose – which means me being ready to take on this role. It's not about me, it's about the organization, it's about the Jacksonville Jaguars, it's about the Khan family.
"Every decision I make, every piece of advice I give will be through the lens of one thing, is it good for the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Khan family and does it help us win football games? That's going to be my approach."
QUOTABLE
- Boselli: "Shad Khan is a great owner. If you look at what Shad Khan has done since he has been the owner of this franchise, I don't know how anyone can say anything but he's one of the best owners in the NFL. He has invested in the franchise. He has given every resource to our players and coaches to do what they need to do. He has invested in facilities. We have a new stadium coming –and beyond that, he has invested in our city. A big reason we have a football team here in Jacksonville was our first owner was great, Wayne Weaver, bringing it here. But Shad Khan is a big, big, big reason that the NFL is in Jacksonville. I think he's one of the best owners. If you look at the whole body of work, it's really tough to argue that point."
QUOTABLE
- Boselli on EVP: "This is something I've thought about a long time. I love this place and as much as I love doing radio, the competitor in me always is like, 'It's just not scratching that itch because I want to be in the game. I want to kind of in the trenches like an offensive lineman – getting stuff done and helping and making a difference.' And so when that opportunity came, it was a decision I really thought through in detail and making sure, but at the end of the day, it was a pretty easy decision because this is really a dream of mine."
