NFL Media and Jaguars Media Analyst Bucky Brooks Examines Jaguars Victory vs. Titans | Scout's Take

1211 Scout's Take Article - Week 14

JACKSONVILLE – In a weekly feature for the 2024 season, NFL Media and Jaguars Media analyst Bucky Brooks breaks down the Jaguars' performance in a 10-6 Week 14 victory over the Tennessee Titans at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tenn.

BIG IMPRESSION

  • The Jaguars surprised the naysayers with a gritty win against the Titans. The team played with better-than-anticipated energy and enthusiasm and did not look like the two-win team that entered the contest. With the defense putting on an impressive four-quarter exhibition, the Jaguars kept the game close until the offense caught fire in the fourth quarter. With the team's new stars (wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr.., running back Tank Bigsby and cornerback Jarrian Jones) showing up in crucial moments, the Jaguars chalked up Win No. 3 against a bitter rival on the road.

KEYS TO VICTORY

  • The Jaguars showed up and showed out in a gutsy performance that revealed the team's character. Instead of packing it in amid a disappointing season, the Jaguars battled for four quarters against a division rival. Though it was not a pretty offensive performance, quarterback Mac Jones directed a pair of late-game scoring drives that helped the Jaguars push ahead of the Titans in the fourth quarter. With the defense coming up with a pair of timely stops to thwart a Titans' comeback, Head Coach Doug Pederson's squad won due to an impressive team effort.

MAC'S MOMENT

  • Credit fourth-year veteran Jones for competitiveness and grit as a player. Despite an inconsistent first-half showing, Jones found his rhythm when it mattered and guided the Jaguars on a pair of late-game scoring drives that decided the contest. With Jones making a concerted effort to get the ball to Thomas with the game on the line, the Jaguars' offense finally looked like the juggernaut many envisioned heading into the season. If Jones can build upon the momentum created in the fourth quarter, he could help the Jaguars close the season with a bang.

UNSUNG HERO

  • The Jaguars might have found a defensive gem in Jones. The Florida State product displayed the versatility and playmaking skills scouts raved about during the pre-draft process. Moreover, the rookie played with the confidence and swagger of a ten-year veteran who understands how to seize the moment in a big game. With No. 22 emerging as a "blue-chip" standout as a slot defender, the Jaguars' defensive backfield could transform into a team strength in 2025.

OFFENSIVELY SPEAKING

  • It took three quarters for the offense to get going, but Pederson and offensive coordinator Press Taylor might have unlocked a game plan that could produce more wins for the Jaguars down the stretch. By opting for a "players over plays" approach in the fourth quarter, with the call sheet prioritizing "touches" for the Jaguars' top playmakers (Thomas, Bigsby and tight end Engram), the offense finally found its rhythm against a pesky Titans defense. With Pederson and Taylor also electing to play with more "tempo" in the fourth quarter, the Jaguars might have created a "fast-break" offense that better suits its personnel.

DEFENSIVELY SPEAKING

  • The defense deserves a round of applause after one of its best performances of the year. Defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen called a near-perfect game that helped the Jaguars throttle the Titans' offense for four quarters. Though the unit started slow, the defense played a 'bend-but-don't-break" style that prioritizes red-zone efficiency over yardage. With the Jaguars eliminating the explosive plays while forcing the Titans to drive the field length, the unit played the odds and eventually generated stops on timely plays from a scrappy bunch of defenders.
