Bucky Brooks On Jaguars Division Loss vs. Texans | Scout's Take

1205 Scout's Take Article - Week 13

JACKSONVILLE – In a weekly feature for the 2024 season, NFL Media and Jaguars Media analyst Bucky Brooks breaks down the Jaguars' performance in a 23-20 Week 13 loss to the Houston Texans at EverBank Stadium.

BIG IMPRESSION

  • The Jaguars' playoff hopes and opportunity to knock off the Texans rode off into the sunset on quarterback Trevor Lawrence's cart on Sunday. The brutal knockout of the franchise quarterback squashed the team's chances of pulling an upset that could have sparked a playoff run and reversed the team's fortunes this season. Without No. 16 available to ignite a dormant offense or inspire a struggling defense, the Jaguars could not hang in a divisional battle that was not as close as the final score indicated.

KEYS TO VICTORY

  • The Jaguars could not seize control of a nip-and-tuck game for most of the first half. The lack of a consistent running game and a few blown big-play chances by Lawrence and quarterback Mac Jones kept the Jaguars from pulling ahead of the division leaders. Though the Jaguars closed the gap in the fourth quarter, the defense could not slow down running back Joe Mixon and the Texans' vaunted running game when it mattered most. Given the lack of big plays in crucial moments throughout the season, the Jaguars' tenth loss is part of a trend (seven one-score defeats) that must be addressed in the offseason.

TREVOR'S TIME

  • Despite displaying the toughness and courage expected of a franchise quarterback, Lawrence could not help the Jaguars end a five-game losing streak. The former No. 1 overall pick appeared rusty and out of sync following a three-week layoff due to a shoulder injury. Lawrence completed just four passes in ten attempts, including an interception on a severely underthrown deep ball that his injury might have impacted. With the fourth-year pro was knocked out of the game on the subsequent drive, the Jaguars' QB1 was not rewarded for his courage and valor on Sunday.

UNSUNG HERO

  • Wide receiver Parker Washington recorded the first 100-yard game of his career, displaying outstanding hands, ball skills and big-play ability as a playmaker on the perimeter. The second-year pro continues to flash as an emerging "core" player with the speed and explosiveness to deliver field-flipping plays in the passing game. With Washington evolving into a reliable complementary playmaker opposite rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas, Jr., the Jaguars might have found another young offensive player to build around.

OFFENSIVELY SPEAKING

  • The Jaguars continue to struggle offensively against top teams. Despite their persistence and patience in attempting to jump-start the running game, the Jaguars were unable to lean into a ball-control game plan that enabled the team to reduce the number of total possessions while setting up big play chances on play-action passes. With an unreliable running game and a limited aerial attack, the Jaguars could not string together a series of first downs or score enough points.

DEFENSIVELY SPEAKING

  • The defense battled for four quarters but could not make enough plays to knock off a playoff contender. The unit's inability to contain the running game, in particular, prevented the Jaguars from getting off the field in crucial moments. Given the defense's lack of timely playmaking throughout the season, the Jaguars' defensive shortcomings against the Texans are part of a disappointing trend that has keyed the team's 10-loss season.
