Elite Players Made Key Plays That Led to a Week 5 Victory | The Day After

Week 5 Day After

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars won, and that was good.

But when discussing the first victory of the 2024 season, Head Coach Doug Pederson on Monday focused on the how and the why more than the result.

Big-time players made key plays at key times, and that matters.

"That's what it's going to take," Pederson said.

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw for a season-high 371 yards and two touchdowns, and the Jaguars drove for a late field goal in a 37-34 victory over the Indianapolis Colts at EverBank Field Sunday. The Jaguars are now 1-4, with games in London against the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots the next two weeks.

"It's a lot better coming here on Monday after a win than it is after a loss," Jaguars veteran safety Darnell Savage said.

Pederson, speaking at his weekly day-after media availability, lauded the Jaguars' offensive line's play against Indianapolis. He also lauded defensive end Travon Walker, who had a career-high three sacks – including one that forced a late first-half field goal and one on the game's final play.

"You're really seeing his power, his length, his speed and his athleticism and who he is as a player," Pederson said of Walker, who has five sacks this season.

Walker was among multiple front-line players with big plays at key times Sunday, with running back Tank Bigsby rushing for second-half touchdowns of 19 and 65 yards and rookie receiver Brian Thomas Jr.’s 85-yard first-half touchdown reception the second-longest play in franchise history.

"Our good players, our best players – the elites – stepped up in crucial moments and made the plays that football game," he said.

The Jaguars, after losing three times in the first four games by five or fewer points, drove 39 yards on eight plays in the final three minutes Sunday. Rookie kicker Cam Little's 49-yard field goal with :17 remaining provided the game's final points.

The Jaguars first three losses were decided on the final play (Week 1, Miami), the final play (Week 2, Cleveland) and with :18 remaining (Week 4, Houston).

"It's going to take that week in and week out," Pederson said. "I shared with the team that we've been in four one-score games already. It's going to come down to the last four, five, six minutes of a football game.

"That's when you need those best players to really step up and make an impact, and they did that as well."

Bigsby, a second-round third-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, rushed for a career-high 101 yards on 13 carries against the Colts. He has rushed for 273 yards and two touchdowns this season on 34 carries – an 8.0-yards-per-carry average. He also had a 58-yard run against the Texans last Sunday.

Pederson called Bigsby's performance Sunday "impressive."

"He's aggressive, physical – kind of a one-cut guy," Pederson said. "There are some teaching moments for us to be able to continue to show him – where the hole will be. He will take that and improve this week. He played well. It's good to see from him, because as the season goes, you're going to need two [running backs], or maybe all three."

NOTABLE

  • The Jaguars' travel plans for the week remain in place for now, Pederson said Monday. The Jaguars are scheduled to fly to London late Thursday afternoon in advance of their game against the Bears at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium Monday. Hurricane Milton is approaching the West Coast of Florida and estimated to make landfall Wednesday or Thursday. "We're still on schedule," Pederson said. "We're going to monitor it. As of right now, everything's still on."

NOTABLE

  • Wide receiver/returner Devin Duvernay will be on the injury report this week after leaving Sunday's game with what was reported as a hamstring injury, Pederson said. Pederson also on Monday said tight end Evan Engram may return against the Bears after missing the past four games with a hamstring injury. "He was really close last week," Pederson said of Engram. "I would anticipate him doing more this week and seeing where he's where he's at the end of the week. The chances of him getting back in here this week are pretty good." Pederson said running back Travis Etienne Jr. should be "fine" after missing snaps late Sunday after reaggravating a shoulder injury. Pederson also said players such as cornerback Tyson Campbell (hamstring) and safety Andrew Wingard (knee) could begin returning to practice in the coming weeks. "These next couple of weeks are big for us to get some players back," he said. "We're getting close to getting all our guys back, and that's a good thing."
