JACKSONVILLE – Doug Pederson’s faith remains strong.
The circumstances these days around the Jaguars are tough. And tiring. But when Pederson spoke to the media a day after the most one-sided loss in franchise history, he spoke of a team that remains focused and motivated.
"I don't believe they're letting go of the rope," he said.
Pederson, in his third season as the Jaguars’ head coach, spoke a day after a 52-6 loss to the Detroit Lions at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich. The Lions scored touchdowns on their first seven possessions and outgained the Jaguars, 645-170.
"The team that was out there yesterday was not us," Pederson said. "That's not what we stand for.' How we performed, that's not who we are. It's not how I coach. It's not how we prepare during the week. It's not how the players practice."
The Jaguars have lost four consecutive games, and have lost 14 of 17 games dating to last season, with Pederson on Monday speaking of a tired team – and a team fatigued by losing – entering this week's Week 12 bye.
The bye is the latest in franchise history.
"On top that, we're not winning," Pederson said. "We're not executing. We're not winning games. The guys are tired. The guys are mentally, physically fatigued. This is a good time to step away and take a break and recharge for the last six games.
"Even visiting with guys today and seeing the guys today, they're tired. Each week, each Monday, we haven't felt very good. That also weighs on you. That's hard. That's hard emotionally. I see these guys practice and do the things during the week, and not be rewarded for that on Sundays.
"That also plays a part in this as well."
Pederson added, "You can criticize me all you want. Point the finger at me. That's fine because it's where it starts. But the players, they put their best foot forward every single day. This is an exhausted team right now, and we need this week to get rejuvenated again, get fresh again, get ready to go for the last six games."
Pederson, too, said he met with owner Shad Khan following Sunday's game with no plans to do so Monday – also reiterating what he said immediately following Sunday's loss that he is "still evaluating" whether to make staff changes.
"You have to be really, really careful when you start pointing fingers at certain people," he said. "It's a dangerous thing and I'm not going to do that. Not right now. As a head coach in this league that's going through what we're going through, you're pointing a finger.
"If it's going to be pointed, point it at me. Start with me."
With backup Mac Jones starting at quarterback in place of injured starter Trevor Lawrence, the Jaguars have produced their two lowest yardage totals of the season the past two weeks – 143 in a 12-7 loss to the Minnesota Vikings and 170 Sunday. Pederson also on Monday was asked if he might change the approach in play-calling.
"Let's just put it this way: everything's on the table," he said. "Let's leave it at that."
Jaguars players will be off after Tuesday, with coaches working further into the week.
"We're still getting together tomorrow in the morning," Pederson said. "We've got a couple things we got to take care of, sort of business side. But other than that, my plan was to get them in here and do a little work tomorrow as well.
"Where we are, the best thing is just cut them loose, let them start getting healthy, let them get fresh, get away, get away from me, I'll get away from them, type thing. And enjoy the week."
Sunday's loss capped one of the Jaguars' most-difficult stretches of the season – with four games in four weeks against contending NFC teams. The first three games – losses to the Green Bay Packers (30-27), Philadelphia Eagles (28-23) and Minnesota Vikings (12-7) – followed a season-long trend of close losses, with six of the Jaguars' losses this season decided in the final minute.
The Jaguars also entered Sunday having lost the time-of-possession in one-sided fashion the last two weeks -- 38:12-21-48 against the Eagles and 42:19-17:41 against Minnesota.
"It's time to just hit the reset button and sort of rewind, get fresh again, coaches and players," Pederson said. "We've got to look at everything from a schematic standpoint, player standpoint, personnel standpoint. If we come out of this bye and we just kind of keep doing the same things and trying to expect different results, it's probably not going to happen.
"That's what we're going to spend these next couple of days doing."
NOTABLE PRESS CONFERENCE MOMENTS
- Wide receiver Gabe Davis will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury sustained Sunday, Pederson said Monday. Davis, who signed as an unrestricted free agent this past offseason from the Buffalo Bills, caught 20 passes for 239 yards and two touchdowns in 10 games this season. "I hate it for him," Pederson said. "He's battled through some injury this season. He was in good spirits today."
- Pederson said other players sustaining lesser issues Sunday – left tackle Walker Little, left guard Ezra Cleveland, cornerback Tyson Campbell, cornerback Montaric Brown, cornerback Ronald Darby and center Mitch Morse – "will be fine."
