JACKSONVILLE – Fifteen down, two remain.
And while the first 15 games have featured various levels of adversity, Doug Pederson on Monday offered no excuses as a disappointing 2024 regular season approaches an and.
The Jaguars simply haven't done enough often enough so far.
"We just haven't been consistent enough in our play," he said.
Pederson, in his third season as the Jaguars' head coach, spoke to the media Monday afternoon a day after a 19-14 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. It marked the Jaguars' seventh loss in eight games, with the Raiders ending a 10-game losing streak.
The Jaguars on Sunday played without starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence and three of the four top receivers entering the season – wide receivers Christian Kirk and Gabe Davis and tight end Evan Engram.
"It's a tough situation to be in, but at the same time I'm not going to make excuses for it," Pederson said. "We are who we are. We all take responsibility. It's something we have to look hard at and try to fix."
The Jaguars (3-12) on Sunday took leads of 7-0 and 14-13, with running back Tank Bigsby rushing for a first-quarter touchdown and wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr.'s 62-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Mac Jones giving them their final lead late in the third quarter.
But the Jaguars also committed eight penalties for 60 yards, with Bigsby and tight end Brenton Strange each losing second-quarter fumbles in the Jaguars' ninth loss of the season by a touchdown or less.
"It's not an undisciplined group," Pederson said. "If you were at practice during the week, and meetings, and all of the things that go on, it's not an undisciplined group."
Pederson said at times mistakes that lead to losses come down to players trying to more than that is asked and "taking things into your own hands at times."
"It's different guys." Pederson said. "Sometimes you just try to do too much. It's all in good intention. It's not a lack of discipline. They're trying to make a play and unfortunately sometimes when they do, they guess wrong and then something negative happens in the game."
Pederson added, "We just have to continue to work on doing what we're asked to do. When we do, great things happen. Good things happen. Good plays happen. We have to be able to get more of that out of our guys."

NOTABLE
- Pederson on Monday discussed in detail the Jaguars' final offensive play Sunday, on which Jones passed to running back D'Ernest Johnson short of the line to gain on fourth-and-11 from the Jaguars 38. Johnson was stopped for an eight-yard gain and the Raiders took possession and ran out the clock. "We had a play called that was built for a specific defense and they defensed it," Pederson said. "They sunk the coverage back, got underneath all our deep throws and Mac put the ball in play. D'Ernest has been a starter for us. He has been in the rotation for us. It was just an opportunity at that point that he was in the football game. In that situation, he's been our third and fourth-down back for the majority of the season because of the protection stuff. Obviously coming up short, I think it's more about what the Raiders did and how their defense was able to defend that play. Would we like to have the play over? There's probably a handful of plays you'd like to have over, but they defensed it and we put the ball in play and it came up a couple of yards short."
NOTABLE
- Jaguars left tackle Walker Little sustained a high-ankle sprain in the first quarter Sunday and likely will miss Sunday's home game against the Tennessee Titans, Pederson said, with safety Darnell Savage beginning the week in the concussion protocol after being injured Sunday. Linebacker Ventrell Miller is expected to be day-to-day with an ankle injury sustained against the Raiders. "We'll see as the week progresses with him," Pederson said of Miller. Three other players – cornerback Tyson Campbell (shoulder), cornerback Jarrian Jones and right tackle Anton Harrison (shoulder) – returned Sunday after sustaining injuries. "They're going to be fine," Pederson said of the trio.
QUOTABLE
- Pederson on veteran safety Andrew Wingard, who registered three second-half passes defensed playing extensively after Savage left the game: "I thought Dewey played well. We all think Dewey’s a capable starter in this league and he was trending that way before [preseason knee] injury [that kept him out the first nine regular-season games]. He got his opportunity. He made the most of it. Great job by Dewey, coming in and filling in in that role. We'll see how Save does this week, but definitely could increase Dewey's playing potential these next couple of weeks."Wingard played five snaps in five previous games this season before playing 63 Sunday.
