Takeaways Remain Top of Mind for Jaguars Defense in Week 5

1003 Ryan Nielern Presser Reca

JACKSONVILLE – The focus is there, as is the intent.

Ryan Nielsen said what's necessary now are results, with the Jaguars' defense very much wanting – and needing – to force turnovers as the season's first month turns into the second.

"We have to start doing it – we have to," he said.

Nielsen, the Jaguars' first-year defensive coordinator, and offensive coordinator Press Taylor spoke with the media Thursday as the Jaguars (0-4) prepared to play the Indianapolis Colts (2-2) at EverBank Stadium Sunday. Among the topics Nielsen discussed:

A defense that has played well enough to win in three of four games but has yet to force a turnover.

"We're talking about it," Nielsen said. "We're coaching it. We're practicing it. Our players are talking about it. There's a fine balance of not pressing too hard, but staying positive with it and staying the course."

The Jaguars forced 27 turnovers each of the past two seasons, and Nielsen said confidence in the area remains strong.

"We need to stay positive, stay the course, continue to build this the right way," he said. "We're coming up on our fifth game together. Just build the foundation, stay positive and stay the course of what we're doing.

"Once one happens, it leads to two. Sometimes they just come in bunches. It's not how you start, it's how you finish. That's what the important thing is. We're staying positive with it, and we're working on getting one this week."

The Jaguars, who rank 30th in the NFL with 380.0 yards per game allowed, have dealt with a slew of injuries on defense. Linebacker Foye Oluokun (foot), cornerback Tyson Campbell (hamstring) and safety Andrew Wingard (knee) remain on injured reserve, with defensive end Josh Hines-Allen in concussion protocol this week. Safety Darnell Savage (quadricep) has missed the last three games.

"You never want to lose a player on your team," Nielsen said. "You want everybody to play it, but it's the business that we're in. It's the game. We prepare for that. It's a next-man-up mentality. in quality. It doesn't make it any easier. It does present a challenge, but we coach all those guys.

"There's no depth chart. Next man up mentality, same fundamentals, same technique. We don't change the calls or anything like that. We just go out and play ball. We want all those guys to be out there. We're just staying the course, one day at a time. Next man up."

NOTABLE

  • Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd (knee) and defensive end Hines-Allen practiced on a limited basis Thursday after missing practice Wednesday. Lloyd missed a loss to the Houston Texans this past Sunday and Hines-Allen sustained his injury in that game. Seven Jaguars players practiced limited for a second consecutive day Thursday: Linebacker Yasir Abdullah (neck), running back Tank Bigsby (shoulder), wide receiver Gabe Davis (shoulder), tight end Evan Engram (hamstring), running back Travis Etienne Jr. (shoulder), cornerback Jarrian Jones (shoulder) and Savage). Engram and Savage have missed the last three games.

NOTABLE

  • Taylor on Thursday discussed quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who completed 18 of 33 passes for 169 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions against the Houston Texans this past Sunday. Lawrence in the game also missed two potential touchdowns on errant passes to wide receiver Christian Kirk and Brian Thomas Jr. "We don't lose confidence in Trevor for missing a throw," Taylor said. "It's going to happen here and there. Obviously, some of the ones that we missed the other day were potential big plays. But that doesn't deter us from anything. He has never shown anything to lack of confidence to let anything like that affect him. If he came off and you saw the wide eyes or you saw something or he said something that made you nervous, then it's like, 'All right. We have to get this guy some layups. We have to get him back in the groove.' We've never once felt that from Trevor. As long as we continue to see confidence from himself, this team, this offense, this coach, we have ultimate confidence in Trevor to deliver every single time we ask him to. Is he going to? No. It's rare that people do it every single time. There's no lack of confidence. We'll continue to give him the ball in critical situations."
