HC Doug Pederson Confident With Entire Tight End Room With Evan Out for the Season

FRI UPDATE

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars have lost another skill player.

Evan Engram, the Jaguars' starting tight end the past three seasons, on Friday was ruled out for the season with a labrum injury.

"Unfortunately, we're going to lose Evan for the year," Head Coach Doug Pederson said.

Pederson, speaking two days before a home game against the New York Jets (3-10) at EverBank Stadium, said Engram will have surgery to address the issue. Engram sustained the injury in a road victory over the Tennessee Titans this past Sunday, undergoing MRIs and tests this week.

"Next man up," Pederson said. "That's what you have to do. You just got to rally and have that next-man-up mentality."

The Jaguars (3-10) currently have three tights ends available: Second-year veteran Brenton Strange, fourth-year veteran Luke Farrell and fifth-year veteran Josiah Deguara. Engram has 47 receptions for 365 yards and one touchdown this season, with Strange catching 23 passes for 256 and two touchdowns. Farrell has nine receptions for 55 yards this season and Deguara has two receptions for 10 yards.

"We've been pleased with Brenton – excited about Brenton, really," Pederson said. "He has done a nice job for us, and this will be a great opportunity for him to really showcase himself a little bit within our offense. Another opportunity for Luke as well to get more of an opportunity in these last four games – and Josiah, too

"This will be good for him. Really expect him to continue playing at a high level."

Engram is the fourth front-line Jaguars skill player to sustain a season-ending injury this season. The others: Quarterback Trevor Lawrence (shoulder/concussion, three games missed), wide receiver Christian Kirk (collarbone, five games missed), wide receiver Gabe Davis (knee, three games missed).

"It's tough," Pederson said. "It's unfortunate. Can't make excuses for it, it's part of the game but it's a great opportunity for the next guy. Football is a tough sport. It's a violent sport and injuries are going to happen. The guys play tough and physical, and they play hard. That's what I ask and that's what they do. They put their bodies on the line every single week and stuff like this happens."

  • Pederson said he expects veteran wide receiver Josh Reynolds to have a role Sunday. Reynolds, an eight-year veteran claimed off waivers from the Denver Broncos last week, has 232 career receptions for 3,116 yards and 20 touchdowns. "Smart kid, has picked up our offense pretty well," Pederson said. "Only been here for a week and has done a good job fitting in. Obviously, now we expect his role to really increase more and more these last few games."
