JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars moved to the league's roster limit Saturday.
They did so by expectedly placing a high-profile rookie and a young offensive lineman on injured reserve – and by releasing a slew of other players.
Rookie defensive end Dante Fowler Jr., the No. 3 overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft, officially was placed on injured reserve Saturday, as was second-year offensive tackle Josh Wells. The moves were among 15 made as the Jaguars trimmed their roster to the league-mandated 75 players.
All NFL teams must trim their roster to 75 players by 4 p.m. Tuesday.
The Jaguars also waived/injured second-year wide receiver Greg Jenkins and waived the following players:
Third-year linebacker Mister Alexander, rookie defensive end Camaron Beard, first-year offensive lineman Cody Booth, fifth-year cornerback Tommie Campbell, rookie safety Desmond Cooper, rookie defensive tackle Eric Crume, fifth-year wide receiver Tandon Doss, second-year linebacker Khairi Fortt, rookie tight end Connor Hamlett, first-year kicker/punter Kasey Redfern, rookie offensive lineman Jack Rummells and second-year quarterback Jeff Tuel.
Fowler sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament on the first day of rookie minicamp less than a week after the draft. He underwent successful surgery shortly thereafter and is expected to return next season.
Wells, who signed with Jaguars as a collegiate free agent, played 12 games as a rookie last season. He sustained a dislocated left thumb against the Giants in Preseason Week 2 on August 22.
Jenkins sustained a high-ankle sprain against the Giants. If he clears waivers on Monday, he will revert to the team's injured reserve list.
Doss, who led the NFL in punt return average in 2013, signed with the team as an unrestricted free agent in the 2014 offseason and missed last season with an ankle injury. Fortt, a fourth-round selection in the 2014 NFL Draft by New Orleans, played three games last season after signing from Cincinnati's practice squad.
Tuel, who spent 2013 and 2014 with Buffalo after signing with the Bills as a collegiate free agent, had been claimed off waivers by the Jaguars on June 1. The Jaguars active roster is now at 75 players. All NFL clubs must reduce their rosters to 75 players by 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, September 1.
