JACKSONVILLE, Fla. –The Jacksonville Jaguars have signed LB Donald Payneand LB Malcolm Smith to the active roster, the club announced today. To make room on the active roster, the Jaguars placed TE Geoff Swaim (ankle, concussion protocol) and LB D.J. Alexander (foot) on the team's reserve/injured list. The Jaguars also signed LB Sutton Smith (No. 45) to the team's practice squad.
Payne, 5-11, 217, previously appeared in 21 career games for the Jaguars during the 2017-18 seasons and totaled 15 tackles (11 solo). Payne originally entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie with Baltimore on May 5, 2017 from Stetson University and was claimed off waivers by Jacksonville on Sept. 2, 2017. Payne will wear No. 54 for the Jaguars.
Smith, 6-0, 225, has appeared in 100 career games with 51 career starts during stints with San Francisco (2017-18), Oakland (2015-16) and Seattle (2011-14). His career totals include 366 career tackles (276 solo), 17 passes defensed, eight forced fumbles and 6.0 sacks. Smith was named Super Bowl XLVIII MVP while with the Seahawks after posting 10 tackles, a fumble recovery and a pick six in Seattle's Super Bowl victory against Denver on Feb. 2, 2014. Last season, Smith appeared in 12 games for San Francisco and posted 35 tackles (22 solo) and one pass defensed before being released by the 49ers on Aug. 27, 2019. Smith will wear No. 53 for the Jaguars.
