Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley added to his coaching staff today as Todd Wash (defensive line), Luke Butkus (assistant offensive line) and Tony Sorrentino (offensive quality control) signed contracts. Length and terms of the contracts are undisclosed.
Jaguars strength and conditioning coordinator Tom Myslinski, assistant strength and conditioning coach Josh Hingst, strength assistant Cedric Scott and defensive assistant Brandon Blaney have been retained by Bradley.
Wash and Bradley were on the same staff at Seattle the last two seasons (2011-12) and the two also coached together at North Dakota State (2002-03) for two seasons and the 2007 season with Tampa Bay.
The Seahawks led the NFL in 2012 by allowing a franchise-record low 15.3 points per game and ranked fourth in total defense (306.2). Wash worked closely with defensive end Chris Clemons during his tenure in Seattle. Clemons, who posted the two highest sack totals of his career the last two seasons, posted a career-best 11.5 sacks in 2012 which ranked ninth in the NFL. Rookie defensive end Bruce Irvin led all NFL rookies with eight sacks. The 19.5 sacks between Clemons and Irvin ranked as the sixth-highest for a tandem in the NFL. The Seahawks improved from 33 sacks in 2011 to 36 in 2012.
Wash entered the NFL coaching ranks with the Buccaneers where he spent four seasons (2007-10) with the last three as defensive line coach. Prior to joining the Buccaneers, Wash had two stints (2002-03, 2005-06) as an assistant coach at his alma mater, North Dakota State. While with the Bison, Wash coached the defensive line and coordinated the run defense. In between appointments at NDSU, he spent the 2004 season as defensive coordinator/linebackers coach at Missouri Southern State.
Wash began his coaching career at Fort Lewis College in 1996 as defensive coordinator and was promoted to head coach/defensive coordinator for three seasons (1997-99). He worked as defensive coordinator at Nebraska-Kearney from 2000-01.
A two-time All-North Central Conference outside linebacker at North Dakota State, Wash played on two national championship teams with the Bison in 1988 and 1990. He holds two degrees from NDSU, including a bachelor's degree in physical education (1994) and a master's in athletic administration (1996).
Now in his sixth NFL season as a coach, Butkus spent two seasons with the Seattle Seahawks where he was on the same staff with Bradley. Butkus spent the 2012 season as offensive line coach at his alma mater, Illinois.
Prior to returning to his alma mater, Butkus spent five seasons working in the NFL, the last two with the Seahawks under head coach Pete Carroll as quality control assistant working with the offensive line. He worked as an offensive assistant/assistant offensive line coach with the Chicago Bears under head coach Lovie Smith from 2007-09. Butkus began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Oregon from 2005-06, helping the Ducks to appearances in the 2005 Holiday Bowl and the 2006 Las Vegas Bowl.
A three-year starting center at Illinois from 1999-2001, Butkus was a third-team All-America selection by the Associated Press in 2001 and was a two-time All-Big Ten selection in 2000 and 2001. He was signed by the Chicago Bears as an undrafted rookie in 2002 and spent most of the season on the San Diego Chargers' practice squad. He played two seasons in NFL Europe, for the Rhein Fire in 2003 and the Cologne Centurions in 2004, before moving into the coaching ranks. A graduate of Bloom Township High School in suburban Chicago, Butkus is a nephew of NFL Hall of Fame linebacker Dick Butkus, who played with the Bears from 1965-73.
Sorrentino is in his ninth year in coaching and his first season in the NFL. He spent the 2012 season at his alma mater, The College of New Jersey, as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. He also spent two seasons there with responsibility for the wide receivers (2006) and linebackers (2007).
In 2011, Sorrentino served as an offensive graduate assistant at the University of Miami (Fla.) under Jaguars offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch. Prior to joining Miami, Sorrentino served as quarterbacks coach at the University of Minnesota from 2009-10 where Fisch served as offensive coordinator.
Sorrentino began his coaching career in 2005 as an assistant at Morristown Beard High School in New Jersey and also had stints at West Essex (N.J.) High School and Montville (N.J.) Township High School. He completed summer internships with the Baltimore Ravens in 2007 and the Houston Texans in 2002-03. Sorrentino received his bachelor's degree in health and physical education and masters in exercise science from The College of New Jersey, where he was a four-year letterman at wide receiver.
