Head Coach Doug Pederson Discusses Roster Cuts and Gipson Trade Impact Ahead of NFL Roster Deadline

0826 Pederson Press Conference

JACKSONVILLE – This move was about the present and the future.

The Jaguars on Monday morning traded veteran defensive end Trevis Gipson to the Seattle Seahawks for an undisclosed future draft selection, a move Head Coach Doug Pederson called good for the team and player.

"It's a win-win," Pederson said.

Pederson on Monday spoke to the media three days after the 2024 preseason finale, with the team having until Tuesday at 4 p.m. to trim the roster to the NFL regular-season limit of 53 players. Toward that goal, the Jaguars announced the Gipson trade Monday.

Pederson in discussing the move praised young players at the position including rookie Myles Cole and second-year veteran D.J. Coleman. The Jaguars feature veterans Arik Armstead, Travon Walker and Josh Hines-Allen at defensive end.

"Obviously Myles has really improved," Pederson said. "D.J. Coleman is another one that has improved through camp and the offseason program. It's what you want. It's your development. It's what we talked about going back to Day 1 – how we develop the roster. It's a good situation."

The Jaguars acquired Gipson as an unrestricted free agent in March.

"I don't think anybody is expendable," Pederson said of Gipson. "I think when you have good players and other teams have needs, you're obviously going to listen to other teams whether it's during the draft process or free agency or anything. Trevis did an outstanding job for us. It's a good situation for him. It's a good situation for the team he's going to and it's compensation for us.

"It gives him an opportunity to play. He put good tape out there. We wish him nothing but the best. I spoke with him this morning. He's happy and excited for the opportunity."

The Jaguars on Sunday waived six players: Defensive end Raymond Johnson, defensive tackle Jonathan Marshall, linebacker Andrew Parker Jr., wide receiver Joseph Scates, defensive end Breeland Speaks and wide receiver Seth Williams. They released four players: Cornerback Tevaughn Campbell, wide receiver Denzel Mims, tight end Chris Myarick and offensive lineman Keaton Sutherland.

NOTABLE MOMENTS FROM JAGUARS PRACTICE

  • Pederson on Monday also lauded the play of the Jaguars' offensive line in Friday's preseason finale – a 31-0 victory over the Atlanta Falcons at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. This was the first time for the Jaguars' starting line – left tackle Cam Robinson, left guard Ezra Cleveland, center Mitch Morse, right guard Brandon Scherff and right tackle Anton Harrison – playing together in a game with the Jaguars acquiring Morse as a free agent in March. The group on Friday played two series, with the offense scoring touchdowns on both drives. "I saw these guys really kind of roll off the ball," Pederson said. "These guys did a really good job playing together. There was great communication on the sideline between those two series. Saw some physicality in the run game, which is good to see. I thought overall it was really good to see them get out there and get some meaningful reps in those games." Pederson also said he liked the depth of an offensive line that could include Walker Little, Luke Fortner, Blake Hance, Cole Van Lanen and Javon Foster. "It's tough because you see it every year where teams lose an offensive lineman — knock on wood," Pederson said. "They're always looking for big bodies and for me – and [General Manager] Trent [Baalke] is the same way – you just don't want to give them up too easily. These guys have done a nice job giving us that depth."
  • Pederson on Monday also praised third-year defensive end Travon Walker, who registered 10 sacks in 2023. Walker, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, had a strong game Friday with a sack, a hurry and a pass defensed. "You're seeing a guy that is like a sponge," Pederson said. "He's just eating up all the coaching points and it really has been beneficial to him on the field. You're seeing his length show up. You're seeing his power and explosiveness show. Just continues to get better each week, just continues to improve. You see his speed, that athleticism on tape and the physicality part of it, I think shows up. He's done a really nice job."
