JACKSONVILLE – Each week during the 2024 season, Jaguars "experts" – Hall of Famer Tony Boselli, Frank Frangie, Jeff Lageman, Brent Martineau, John Oehser, Brian Sexton, J.P. Shadrick and Kainani Stevens – will analyze the following day's Jaguars matchup.
Tony Boselli, Pro Football Hall of Famer, Former Jaguars Left Tackle and Jaguars Analyst
- The Jaguars will win if: They control the line of scrimmage on offense and run the ball. They need to control the clock and keep the Dolphins' speed on the sideline. On defense, stay over the top and limit the big plays.
- The Dolphins will win if: They turn the game into a track meet. They have as much or more speed than anyone in the NFL. They want to make it a high-scoring affair.
- As Boselli sees it: Week One is always tough to predict and crazy stuff happens. I think the one-two punch of running backs Travis Etienne Jr. and Tank Bigsby is going to have a big day on the ground leading to a Jags victory.
Frank Frangie, Radio Voice of the Jaguars
- The Jaguars will win if: They continue all they accomplished in camp and preseason: playing with purpose, intensity and the like. It was an impressive six weeks. They must protect Lawrence – and perhaps most importantly, get consistent pressure on Tagovailoa. But I like where they are headed into this.
- The Dolphins will win if: They give Tagovailoa ample time and turn Hill and Waddle loose on the Jaguars' secondary. They are probably the fastest tandem of receivers in the league.
- As Frangie sees it: This will be a barnburner. Two teams with legitimate playoff aspirations and beyond. Two young quarterbacks with new contracts, two well-coached football teams who believe their time is now. I see a fourth-quarter game with a late score deciding it.
Jeff Lageman, Jaguars Analyst and Former Jaguars Defensive End
- The Jaguars will win if: They keep the high-powered Miami offense in check. They can do that by tackling well and being assignment clean as a defense. The speed of the Dolphins' offense is impressive with Hill, Waddle, Mostert and De'Von Achane, but they are not invincible as was shown last year when they played teams with winning records.
- The Dolphins will win if: They control the lines of scrimmage and win the turnover battle. The Jaguars struggled in these areas in 2023. If Miami can establish its running game, it will be tough to stop Tagovailoa from connecting with his two speedsters. The Jaguars' revamped secondary will be tested.
- As Lageman sees it: This is a tough matchup, having to face an explosive offense in the first game with a new defense under Nielsen. But the Jaguars' offense will also test a new defensive coordinator in Miami in Anthony Weaver. The Jaguars' offense will be formidable in 2024 with a new element: Deep ball abilities with rookie Brian Thomas Jr and Gabe Davis. Should be a great game!
Brent Martineau, Action Sports Jax Sports Director
- The Jaguars will win if: They score 27-plus points. The Jaguars' offense must get off to a good start and I think controlling possession will be a major factor in this one. The ability to run, stay on the field on third downs and finish in the red zone has to be part of the recipe to win in Miami.
- The Dolphins will win if: They keep Tagovailoa clean for most of the afternoon. The Dolphins will try to get the ball out of his hands to their playmakers and the known commodity of the Jaguars' defense is their front and pass rush. If Miami controls that part of the game, it might be hard to slow down the Dolphins.
- As Martineau sees it: Week One in the NFL is weird, and we all know it. I've liked the Jaguars to win Miami in this one since the schedule came out. I think there's urgency in Jacksonville's locker room and the hard camp plus continuity in their building should lead to a fast start - even on the road. Jaguars win, 30-24.
John Oehser, jaguars.com Senior Writer
- The Jaguars will win if: Quarterback Trevor Lawrence plays as good as he looked in 2024 Training Camp and preseason – and if the Jaguars' defensive front seven controls the game. The thought here is the Jaguars' strength defensively is the foursome of ends Josh Hines-Allen, Travon Walker, Arik Armstead and tackle DaVon Hamilton. That group must win to negate Miami's speed offensively.
- The Dolphins will win if: They win on the outside defensively. Miami's speed offensively can overwhelm secondaries. If quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has time to throw, Dolphins wide receivers Hill and Jaylen Waddle can be uncoverable – and the Dolphins might get too far ahead too early.
- As Oehser sees it: This is a tricky Week 1 matchup. If the Jaguars' defense under Nielsen can pressure Tagovailoa enough to negate the Dolphins' speed and force turnovers, the Jaguars can force mistakes and win. If they can't, the Dolphins' team speed can make even the best secondary look very vulnerable.
Brian Sexton, jaguars.com senior correspondent
- The Jaguars will win if they: Hold Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill to 70 receiving yards. The Dolphins lost seven games last season including the postseason, and Hill averaged 70 yards in those games. He's the most explosive weapon in football and just a handful of teams were able to slow him last season. The Jaguars need not just a great plan but great execution in their first game in new defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen's scheme.
- The Dolphins will win if: Their run defense is as good on Sunday as it was last season. The Dolphins held opponents to just 3.8 yards per rush, which ranked near the top of the NFL in 2023. The Jaguars' inability to convert third-and-short situations and keep the offense on the field last season was a body blow to the way they wanted to play offensively. If new center Mitch Morse and a healthy offensive line can't run when Head Coach Doug Pederson wants to run Sunday, it will be a significant issue.
- As Sexton sees it: The Jaguars are facing one of the AFC's best teams on the road to begin the season. Miami has posted four consecutive winning seasons and has been a playoff team in each of Head Coach Mike McDaniel's first two seasons. Jaguars General Manager Trent Baalke and Pederson did a lot of offseason work to retool the roster and reconstruct the locker room with the right guys who have the right mindset. But this team didn't win the big games on their schedule last season. Until they do it, it's tough to predict they'll do so on Sunday.
J.P. Shadrick, jaguars.com Senior Reporter
- The Jaguars will win if: They can keep Hill from taking the top off the defense, and this starts at the snap. The corners must get hands on him at the line, but if they miss, then it becomes a problem with him running unimpeded. In the past the Dolphins have used a lot of pre-snap motions to get Hill and Waddle free. Those two can also make a five-yard catch turn into a 75-yard touchdown. How the new Jags defense handles it will be something to watch.
- The Dolphins will win if: They run the ball effectively with Pro Bowl running back Raheem Mostert and open more things in the secondary for Tagovailoa. If the Dolphins' defense gets consistent play in the middle of the line, then that's a problem for the Jags offense. This has been a focus this offseason for the Jaguars – third-and-short situations, pocket pressure up the middle, etc., and we will get our first look at how center Mitch Morse and guards Ezra Cleveland and Brandon Scherff work together.
- As Shadrick sees it: Week One games are a little strange. Everything you've built up about a team all offseason could appear – or not – and there are no tendencies from this year to lean upon, only those from the past, that are not as reliable. Expect a wrinkle or a surprise or two from both sides. What's not surprising is the speed of the Dolphins offense that should be on display. We all know it's coming, but it's something that you just cannot replicate on a practice field. The Jags have a good opportunity to win, as they should every week this season.
Kainani Stevens, Jaguars Team Reporter
- The Jaguars will win if: They can hold their own in a shootout. The Jags will need to score early and often. Keeping things close late into the game will give them their best shot.
- The Dolphins will win if: The Jagsuars' defense gets out of sort early. This will be quite a test for Nielsen's first game with Jacksonville, and Miami's firepower could push things off the rails fast.
- As Stevens sees it: It's always hard to predict an outcome for Week 1 because there are truly so many unknowns at the start of a season. I'm going to stay optimistic until the Jaguars give me a reason not to be. Jags win, 30-27.
