Doug Pederson: "We Have to Make Sure We Just Handle Our Business"

1018 Doug Pederson Press Conference

WATFORD, United Kingdom – The week has been difficult.

The signs have been good.

Doug Pederson on Friday said he liked a lot about how the Jaguars have approached this week, with the team preparing to play the New England Patriots (1-5) at Wembley Stadium in London Sunday.

"These guys have weathered this storm well," he said.

Pederson, in his third season as the Jaguars' head coach, spoke to the media Friday and discussed the need to eliminate the mistakes that have led to five losses in the first six games of the season. He discussed basics and fundamentals, too.

"The biggest thing is just to relax and go play," he said. "Have fun. Get back to enjoying football and being with your teammates."

When the Jaguars won back-to-back games in London in 2023 to move from 1-2 to 2-3 and start a five-game winning streak, Pederson spoke of the positives around the trip in terms of camaraderie and preparation. He said this week's trip has had a similar effect following a 35-16 loss to the Chicago Bears at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London last Sunday.

"It's been obviously a great eight, nine, 10 days out here from a bonding experience with the team," he said. "Look: We're all disappointed. We're frustrated. We feel like we should be better than what we are record-wise. We are better than what our record indicates.

"This week was huge. Each day got better. Emotionally got better. And you can see it in practice. You can see the guys flying around having fun. There's enthusiasm. There's laughing. There's joking around. It's just having fun in practice, then getting your work done when you need to get it done. It's important for us at this time to spend this week and a half over here."

Pederson said he saw tangible evidence of the approach throughout the week in "how our guys have focused on the game plan, their attention to detail and practice, the excitement and the enthusiasm of getting back out on the field and just continuing to work."

"I don't see anybody tanking it, quitting, going the other direction," he said. "Everybody's pushing each other, and I'm pushing them. I'm pushing the coaches, and those are all positives. Those are things that are pushing us and moving us forward. That's what we're going to have to do.

Watford, U.K. — Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell (3) during practice at The Grove on October 16, 2024.

"We can't get four games back in one. But we can start chipping away at it. It's a big game for us. We have to make sure we just handle our business."

NOTABLE

  • Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell on Friday practiced limited for a third consecutive day, with Pederson saying his status for Sunday will be decided Saturday. He has missed the last five games with a hamstring injury. "He's doing really well," Pederson said of Campbell. "Tyson looks good. Had a good week of preparation. Barring any setbacks, he should be cleared and good for the game." Running back Travis Etienne Jr. also practiced limited all three days this week with a hamstring injury and will be a game-day decision, Pederson said.
