JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars saw an opportunity and went after it early Friday.

That meant adding a second very talented defensive player in the 2016 NFL Draft, and this time it meant trading up to do so.

Myles Jack, a linebacker from UCLA once considered one of the top talents in the '16 draft, became the Jaguars' second selection in this year's draft early Friday evening. The Jaguars took him with the No. 5 selection of the second round, the No. 36 selection overall.

The Jaguars traded up with the Baltimore Ravens to obtain the selection, giving up the No. 38 overall selection and the No. 146 selection of this year's draft. The No. 38 selection was a second-round selection and the No. 146 was a fifth-round selection.

The Jaguars selected Florida State cornerback Jalen Ramsey with the No. 5 overall selection in Thursday night's first round.

Jack (6-feet-1, 245 pounds), widely projected as a Top 5 selection in this draft much of the offseason, slid to the second round because of a knee injury sustained many last September. There have been reports that the knee could limit Jack over the long-term though most reports indicate it shouldn't be an issue for the short term.

Jack sustained a torn lateral meniscus in September, and declared for the draft to forgo his final year of eligibility. The concern over Jack's knee reportedly stems not as much from the meniscus but from what is referred to as an osteochondral defect, the effects of which could force surgery a few years into the future.

Jack withdrew from school last fall to focus on draft preparation. Because of the lingering effects of the knee injury, he did not run a 40-yard dash at the NFL Scouting Combine. Analysts began consistently projecting to the Jaguars at No. 5 around that time.

Jack, one of the most versatile players to enter the draft in recent memory, was named the Pac 10 Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year as a freshman. He was second-team All-Pac 12 as a linebacker that season with two interceptions and 11 passes defensed, and he and also scored seven touchdowns as a running back that season.

He was a second-team All-Pac 10 selection at linebacker again as a sophomore, registering one interception and seven passes defensed. He registered an interception and 15 tackles in three games before the season-ending injury as a junior in 2015.

Jack is considered one of the best pass-coverage linebackers to enter the NFL in recent memory and has played cornerback in college. He also has been considered as a strong safety prospect in the NFL, with the Jaguars reportedly telling him during the pre-draft process that they could use him as a safety/linebacker hybrid.

He is a possibility at all three linebacker positions, but likely would begin on the strong side for the Jaguars and probably would be on the field in nickel situations.
