O-Zone: Smart kid

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

JK from NY & Fernandina Beach, FL

Great to see the Jags and Jets both playing hard get a win. The only Tank on the field Sunday was Bigsby. That game was a great lesson for the young players about playing for pride.

The Jaguars lost to the New York Jets, 32-25, at EverBank Stadium Sunday – and if you were of a mind to watch for such things, the game indeed was an example of fight and pride for both teams. This was a game sans playoff ramification, a disappointing fact for two franchises that entered the season with high expectations. From this view, it's hard to emphasize fight and pride; we've spent too many ends of too many seasons discussing these storylines that are comparatively meaningless and definitely tired. But when a team is 3-11 and long since out of the postseason, I suppose you cling to whatever storylines you can. So … one fer pride, I suppose. Once again. With gusto.

Joe from Alpharetta, GA

Good luck Ryan Nielsen in your future endeavors.

I received multiple emails along these lines late Sunday, and with reason: The defense coordinated by first-year coordinator Ryan Nielsen had another rough game Sunday. The Jets rallied in the fourth quarter largely because Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Davante Adams connected four times for 139 yards in the period – part of a game in which Rodgers threw three touchdown passes and Adams caught nine passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns. Big, explosive plays allowed at key times have been a theme for this defense too often this season. Sunday felt familiar on that front. Tough, tough day,

These teams are in the bottom because they are not disciplined enough. That's in their coaching. Turning off the TV.

You turned on the television to watch two 3-10 teams. You expected high art?

Josh from Atlanta, GA

You picked the home team to win because, why not? This team is dreadful because, they just are? I do feel for Shad. He's obviously going to sleep well because, ya know, billions. But he wants this team to not be the worst in the league, he just can't pick the right guys to do it consistently. Here's to hoping we see a consistently NOT worst team in football before Shad hangs up his owner cleats.

I'll repeat here what I have written often in recent weeks and what I suspect I will write often in the final three weeks of the season. Jaguars Owner Shad Khan has key decisions to make in the coming weeks – or maybe right after the season. I don't know that anyone not named Khan knows for certain the details of those decisions yet. Stay tuned.

George from Savannah, GA

John, let's cut to the chase, in your weekly meeting with Shad at the country club tell him to hire Mike Borgonzi from Kansas City as general manager and Mike Vrabel as head coach.

I don't meet weekly with Khan.

Michael from Orange Park, FL

One fer BTJ?

Jaguars rookie Brian Thomas Jr. again was the team's best player Sunday. He caught two touchdown passes. He set franchise rookie records for receiving yards in a season (956) and touchdowns receiving in a season (eight). He's humble. He's confident. He's a star. One fer BTJ? Absolutely.

Jim from Jagsonville

Love seeing DT 99. J. Ledbetter getting that sack! If you see him, please ask him not to backflip next time... at 299 pounds he hurt my knees watching him land! Go Jaguars!

Jaguars defensive tackle Jeremiah Ledbetter indeed backflipped after a third-quarter sack on Rodgers Sunday. We do not see such feats from defensive linemen every game. It was cool. My guess is fans liked it, even if made their knees hurt.

Roger from White House, FL

Is it in the Jaguars playbook to throw interceptions?

No. Interceptions are typically "off script."

Bruce from Owensboro, KY

No, John. CBS analyst Pete Prisco is right. The fans have checked out. We may still watch and even go to the game, but we don't care like we should. This season was such a disappointment because we really thought the trio of general manager, head coach and quarterback was enough to at least be a contender. We were certain to be in the playoff hunt in December. And we all knew it was over before October. Nothing will ignite the fan base except a complete housecleaning. At least that is this fan's belief. And I hope Shad gets a Mark Lamping type for the football side to make those decisions moving forward.

You're referencing CBS Sports senior writer Pete Prisco recently saying Jaguars fans have checked out – at least the smart ones. I expect that's true to a point. The Jaguars are 3-11. Is it realistic to think all fans are going to have the same interest with that record as they have the past two seasons?

James from Titusville, NJ

Did the Jags play with fight, yet still lose again? Damn right.

Damn right. Fight, fight.

Dave from Waunakee

Arik Armstead reminds me of the great Hugh Douglas free agent signing, who has had more impact?

I don't know. I wasn't covering the Jaguars when defensive end Hugh Douglas was a free agent. I didn't hear "great things."

Greg from Section 122, Jacksonville, FL

While we don't know what Shad will do on Black Monday, I will say this" Shad I don't know if you read this. And feel free to pass this along. You keep General Manager Baalke and this front office, I will not renew my tix. I will also say I know I am not alone. I talk to a good number of fans and the sentiment is all the same. We are SICK OF IT. And for the record, the definition of insanity was from Einstein, who said that to the letter. It is literally the definition of insanity to repeat …

Insanity is defined as "the state of being seriously mental ill, madness." The definition is NOT "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." There's also no evidence Albert Einstein ever said or wrote this, and many scholars believe he did not. And even if he did, Einstein – while a genius – wasn't exactly perfect. Did you ever see the man's hair?

Graham from Reading UK

Throwbacks are cool, BTJ is cooler.

Good one, Graham.

Tony from Johns Creek, GA

Doug, throw the red flag.

The timing of this email suggests you're referencing a toe-tap catch by Adams on a 23-yard reception on the left sideline with 1:34 remaining Sunday. I agree that I wasn't sure that Adams got a second foot inbounds on the play. But this one wasn't on Head Coach Doug Pederson. It's up to replay officials to stop the game and review. Said replay officials evidently determined it was a catch. I wasn't sure. One replay seemed to indicate he didn't. Another seemed to indicate he did. I was surprised it wasn't worth a longer look. I'm surprised by many things.

James from Socorro, NM

The Jaguars had a 76 percent probability of winning, but then decided to give up a 71-yard touchdown pass. If anything, the Jaguars are really good at throwing away games this year.

Really good? They're outstanding.

Sascha from Cologne

Hey, John. What has happened to Tyson Campbell? He just is not elite but gets paid like an elite cornerback. He doesn't play like a CB1. Is it because of the overall performance of the team or is he just overrated?

I don't know that anything has "happened" to Jaguars cornerback Tyson Campbell. He is a good player. It never has been accurate to call him elite.

Allen from St C OH

Disappointing to lead throughout only to lose yet again. I did not agree with trying for two. There obviously was still a lot of football to play, but would have, could have, should have doesn't matter because a loss is a loss.

Yes, it is.

Ed from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fl

I feel sorry for the few good players in the Jaguars roster. They deserve better coaching.

Sometimes in this life, a man wonders what to believe in. He wonders what to trust. He wonders what he can count on when the wind is howling and the enemy is at the door. I have no such uncertainty, no such doubt. For when life is at its toughest, I always, always, always remember that it's always coaching in the NFL.

Paul from Washington, D.C.

My 14-year-old and I arrived home from a frigid scout trip just in time to see a rare Jags Red Zone sighting with the game at 25-25 in the fourth. Before the last Jets touchdown, my son asked: "If 17 is the Jets' best player, why doesn't Captain Mustache make two-three players defend him?" What would you say to the (very observant) kid?

Go get me a beer.
