O-Zone: Reliable rules

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

David from Orange Park, FL

So, Ian Cunningham, huh? Why hide this if it's done?

My Scooby Sense – not my Scobee Sense – tells me someone has been reading erroneous interweb reports about the Jaguars' ongoing general-manager search. The Jaguars this week will conduct the second round of the search, with in-person interviews planned starting Wednesday with the following alphabetically listed candidates: Chicago Bears Assistant General Manager Ian Cunningham, Los Angeles Rams Director of Scouting Strategy James Gladstone, Green Bay Packers Vice President of Player Personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan, Jaguars Interim General Manager Ethan Waugh and San Francisco 49ers Director/Scouting and Football Operations Josh Williams. They also previously interviewed Los Angeles Chargers Assistant General Manager Chad Alexander, Las Vegas Raiders Assistant General Manager Champ Kelly, former Tennessee Titans General Manager Jon Robinson, New York Giants Assistant General Manager Brandon Brown, Buffalo Bills Director of Player Personnel Terrance Gray and Cincinnati Bengals Senior Personnel Executive Trey Brown for the position. While there were reports over the weekend that the Jaguars were working toward a deal with Cunningham, this is not the case. To repeat: The second round of interviews will begin Wednesday. Not before. I would expect a hire soon after that.

Maybe Jaguars Owner Shad Khan can make a layup and bring back the prowlers NOW. Maybe Shad can be new and make the easiest decision ever. Or maybe things are really not changing at all and bad decisions must be made at all costs.

I wouldn't expect the Jaguars to have new uniforms until 2028, and it's way too early to know how those uniforms will look if/when they are unveiled. Insider tip: Uniforms are not the only or best way for a franchise to change. Change is undeniably occurring with this team. There's a new Executive Vice President of Football Operations (Tony Boselli). There's a new head coach (Liam Coen). There will be a new general manager. It's about as new as an NFL team can get.

Did all of Boselli's roles fall under the head coach last year? If not, how did those duties break down?

Most of Boselli's duties as EVP previously reported to the general manager.

Hi, KOAGF. Any chance for a Bullet Gene to compete with the Bullet Bob? It seems Gene is being forgotten in the Hayes/Henry debate.

Longtime Florida Times-Union sports columnist and Northeast Florida cultural icon/thought leader Eugene P. "Gene" Frenette" indeed belongs in the pantheon of great athletes. However, the recent discussion about Bob Hayes and Derrick Henry involves athletes from Jacksonville. Gene hails from parts northeast, so alas … I fear he's part of a bigger discussion.

Bradley from Sparks, NV

Derrick Henry is a darn good power running back that does run pretty fast to the sidelines on third down. Bob Hayes is a historical figure.

OK.

Marty from Jacksonville

Hey, John. I read and hear a lot of pundits talking about how Trevor needs to be "developed" or even that Trevor needs to be "fixed" in some way. I very strongly believe that Trevor needs neither developing nor fixing. He needs help. Nothing will help Trevor more than fixing the defense, or fixing the running game. Any quarterback will struggle if they have to constantly play from behind, or if they constantly face second-and-13, because a running play lost yardage. I see mediocre quarterbacks having great success because they play on great teams. So I say, instead of focusing on Trevor so much, let's build a TEAM. And then Trevor's huge talent will shine through. Wouldn't you agree?

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence must improve and the team must improve around him. It's all essentially one thing.

Do the regional scouts send video clips of (for example) of wide receivers they like to the Jags receivers coach to assist in draft prep? Are the position coaches glued to their seats watching non-stop film of potential draftees at their position when they get on the field?

An NFL team's personnel department scouts college players year-round to prepare for each NFL draft. The personnel department then provides video of prospects at each position to the appropriate position coach early in the offseason. Position coaches typically spend parts of their days in the weeks leading to the draft studying video of prospects at their positions – with the other part spent on their respective side of the ball. They then meet with personnel departments to give their input as the draft approaches.

Nah. Travon Walker is my favorite player. Aidan is a great pass rusher but they are two different types of players. Maybe he turns out to be the greater player in the end. We don't know yet. Hutchinson has already lost how many games due to injuries? You know that matters in football. The choice was over several years ago. Why supposedly fans still want to make it about them? OK man you were right all along we should recognize your brilliance you are the cock of the walk. Now can you shut up so I can enjoy my favorite player. You should be stoked to have Travon. He is a dominant player in the NFL. Go Jaguars!

When it comes to realizing that defensive end Travon Walker is really good – and correctly nothing that the NFL isn't all about sack totals – Don remains "all in."

"NASCAR" Nate from Utah, US

Zone, "...build around Trevor Lawrence". Genius. Cooper Kupp would have been a solid step in that. No? If only Trent Baalke, Urban Meyer, Trent Baalke or Doug Pederson and Trent Baalke would have done something like that. This Jaguars team could already have something like 26 or so players on the roster whose best days in Jacksonville are still in front of them. O-well. By the way, what grade do you give the Jaguars '21, '22 and '23 drafts? Go Jaguars!!

OK in spots. Not as OK in others. The issue with the Jaguars the last few offseasons was more an overemphasis on free agency – particularly last offseason – than poor drafting.

Brian from Carlisle, PA

O, our new head coach has got me energized. While he was talking about the roster and saying we have talent on this team, it made me reflect on this last year: 10 losses by one score. We are not a bad team. We have some talent. The right mindset can turn those games into wins. I do remember quite a few games where we were leading in the fourth quarter, or we grabbed the lead in the fourth quarter, and we still lost because the defense would give up a big play. I think with new coaching and some tweaks and attitude change this team will be competing for the division title. Do you think this is possible?

The Jaguars without question have "some talent." They have a young wide receiver, Brian Thomas Jr., with game-breaking ability. They also have two edge defenders, Josh Hines-Allen and Walker, who are very good and bordering on elite. The Jaguars were good enough to be competitive in those 10 one-score losses in 2024, and that means they're good enough to be not dreadful. At the same time, it's important to not be deluded by that statistic. The NFL is a league of seven-point games and being good enough to lose a lot of close games is the same as not being good enough to be good. The Jaguars absolutely can be good enough to compete for the AFC South title in 2025. That's one level of competitiveness. The idea is to get to the next level where teams such as the Philadelphia Eagles, Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills routinely reside. That's a goal that could take a season or two longer.

It strongly looks like the Jags will have a first-time general manager, head coach, offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator as well as other important positions within the organization. I understand, collectively, they will bring a wealth of experience. However, this is atypical in the NFL to have this many important positions filled with people that have never been in these positions before. Cause for concern? What say you?

The Jaguars over the last 15 seasons have had a lot of experience in a lot of positions. They also have done a lot of losing. There's no magic experience formula that leads to winning. If the people are good, they will do fine. If not, they won't.

Russ from Jacksonville

The KOAF is correct. Time to put this to bed. I have lived in Jacksonville since 1962. Bob Hayes is by far our best athlete. He was born and raised here. Henry was born and raised in Yulee, which isn't part of Duuuuval. Yulee is in Nassau County. The end.

You could have stopped at "The KOAF is correct." That's usually a good rule of thumb.
