JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

If there is such a thing as winning an introductory press conference, Liam Coen did it (although I did not love all the dancing around the chaos of last week). That said, I am over being excited about winning things like the offseason or press conferences. How about winning some football games? I can't fall for it anymore. I'll be excited when I see results on the field.
The Jaguars on Monday afternoon indeed introduced Head Coach Liam Coen to the media and fans in an "introductory press conference," an offseason staple that long-time and loyal Jaguars fans know all too well. Here's what's good for NFL franchises: Stability and quiet Januarys. Here's what's not good for franchises: January introductory pressers followed by eventful Marches with accompanying press conferences to introduce expensive free agents. The Jaguars by necessity are in the middle of an unideal offseason, with an introductory presser Monday likely to be followed by some necessary free-agent spending in March. Here's hoping this is the last such offseason around here for a while. The thought here is there are a lot of things around the Jaguars about to move in the right direction. But because Jaguars fans have seen this movie too many times, I don't remotely expect all fans – if any – to believe that. Don't get too hyped up over pressers or free-agent signings. Wait for the 2025 season and the seasons after that. Judge then. That's the right time to get excited and it's the only reasonable approach. What other approach could you take after the last decade and a half?

So when is Boselli getting announced as the new executive vice president of the Jaguars? Stay tuned?
Jaguars Owner Shad Khan on Monday confirmed that Pride of the Jaguars member and Pro Football Hall of Famer Tony Boselli will have a role with the organization moving forward. I don't know the specifics of the role. That is still being determined. But my sense is it will be a significant role and that's nothing but positive. The culture is changing around here. Stay tuned? Yes – and what you see next I expect you will like very much in time.

Zone. Coach Coen reminds me of Nick Foles physically and also the way he talks ... a bunch of pretty words, saying what people want to hear, yet things didn't work out well for him and the Jags. I hope coach is more action and less pretty talk.
I suppose there is the slightest physical similarity between former Jaguars quarterback Nick Foles and Coen. Forgive me if I don't dwell on it. As far as "pretty words, saying what people want to hear…" well, yeah. That's kinda sorta the nature of an introductory presser. I can't promise what Coen will deliver. He can't promise what he will deliver. No one can. He said a lot of things right, and there were a lot of positives. Coen won the presser Monday. Most coaches do. Now, the work begins.

When do the rules allow contact between players and coaches? After the final game of the regular season or after the conclusion of the Super Bowl?
Players and coaches can have contact at any time. They can't discuss football in any detail from the end of the regular season until the offseason program begins in April.

Can't wait for some football where all is equal and still playing for the love of the game. No multimillion-dollar contracts or egos. UFL starts late March!!!
Text me and let me know how it goes. I'll be around.

Heath Farwell staying. Tony taking on a front office role. I didn't think I'd get such delightful news Monday in addition to a strong (as expected) introductory press conference. One fer good vibes.
Special teams coordinator Heath Farwell indeed will return next season. It was a good day around the Jaguars, and that news was indeed part of the reason.

No-Quest Zone, I want to thank, G.M-T, for: Josh Hines-Allen. Josh Allen was the only prospect in the 2019 NFL draft that I knew I wanted playing in Sacksonville. And when the New York Football Giants went quarterback with the sixth pick, Trent Baalke made it so. That's it. Go Jaguars!!
Former Jaguars General Manager Trent Baalke was not with the Jaguars when they selected defensive end Josh Hines-Allen No. 7 overall in the 2019 NFL Draft, though I'm sure he appreciates the kind words.

I'm starting to see reports of coordinator interviews happening for the Jags, but I haven't heard anything about the futures of Press Taylor or Ryan Nielsen. Are we to assume that they are no longer with the team? I know a new head coach almost always includes new coordinators, but I figured if the team let them go we'd hear about it, unless their contracts just expired and there was no need to report on it.
Offensive coordinator Press Taylor and defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen remain on staff and under contract. I expect that to change soon now that Coen is officially hired. Coen has started the search for a defensive coordinator. I expect the offensive-coordinator search to begin soon. When will we know Taylor and Nielsen are officially not back? When they get hired elsewhere or when the Jaguars announce that the 2025 coaching staff is complete. Either way, there's no real mystery here.

I'm glad we got a coach. Seems like a good one, anyone who can turn Baker Mayfield into a superstar is probably good for the Jags. I will say (and I think you might agree with me?), I would have liked to have seen Brian Schottenheimer on the list of candidates the Jags were considering.
Though Coen certainly had a positive influence on Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield this past season, it's fair to note that Mayfield played well in 2023 – when Coen was working at the University of Kentucky. I wouldn't have minded seeing Schottenheimer involved with the Jaguars, but I didn't think much about it either way.

So much for parity in the NFL.
Parity in the NFL, with rare exceptions, always has been something of a league-generated myth. Most teams can beat most teams on a given Sunday. And bad teams can get to OK fairly quickly. But there are usually a few teams that dominate certain eras, and those teams are usually really hard for bad teams to beat. And it's usually pretty hard for bad teams to go from awful to great.

Baalke left us with a significantly higher floor than when he got here? We went 3-14 with Urban Meyer. Last year we went 4-13. How is that a significantly higher floor?
The roster is better. Remember: Baalke arrived in 2020, when the roster was awful. It's not great. But it's not awful.

KOAF: Your stoicism has been well-documented when it comes to not being a fan of football anymore, but was there any twinge of sadness when the Commanders lost on Sunday or a momentary reflection on your childhood when you were a die-hard fan watching the game with your father?
Loyal O-Zone readers – and he knows who he is – know I grew up a huge fan of the Washington Football Team. The emotions I felt for that franchise growing up and until the early 1990s were real. But I felt absolutely no sadness when the Commanders lost Sunday. My memories and allegiance were to a different team at a different time in my life. I did pause for reflection in this sense: My father and I shared a strong bond for a long time with the franchise. Seeing Washington in the NFC Championship Game did of course bring back memories of that time and of my father, who I miss daily. But that's a different feeling than caring if they won or lost Sunday. On that front, nothing.

Great feeling! In the Jags fan cycle of hope, optimism, excitement, realization, acceptance, despair, and anger we are back to hope! What do you think the odds are of breaking the cycle this time?
Most NFL teams go through a similar cycle in most coaching hires. Sometimes there's some period of success during the "excitement" phase," but most coaching tenures end in despair and anger. I think there's a decent chance for an extended excitement phase in the coming seasons. But we're a few days into this party. We'll see where it goes.

Real life issues trump football issues. I stopped into Strings last Wednesday. On my way to Hilton Head. They were out of Bullet Bob.
Holy #*&!.
