O-Zone: Discernable difference

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Paul from Lake City, FL

I'm looking forward to seeing what's different in the upcoming season. I want to see what changes are made regarding the roster and the offensive and defensive design and execution. I'm also looking forward to reading about some of the things that won't be as visible, like changes in the organizational alignment. The thing I look forward to the most is sitting down at home or in a stadium seat, feeling like it's not crazy to feel like there's a good chance for a win every Sunday. Two weeks ago, I didn't feel any of the above and couldn't imagine doing so.

Times are changing again around the Jaguars. Some Jaguars fans appear to be excited about this, some are cautiously optimistic and some are perhaps a bit cynical. All feelings make sense given current and past circumstances. That such enthusiastic talk of a new day around the Jaguars has been heard before with largely unsuccessful results doesn't mean the results will be unsuccessful moving forward. While it's true that good offseason feelings don't guarantee future success, it's just as true that getting quality decision-makers in place puts you in better position for future success. Head Coach Liam Coen and Executive Vice President of Football Operations Tony Boselli are the sorts of leaders about whom fans should feel good. The next step is hiring a general manager, likely before the end of February. It's OK to feel good about these moves. Then we'll wait to see the results. That's all there is to do.

Sad to hear of Dick Jauron's passing. RIP.

Dick Jauron, the Jaguars' first defensive coordinator who held the position from 1995-1998, indeed died Saturday. He was 74. Jauron also served as head coach of the Chicago Bears from 1999-2003 and the Buffalo Bills from 2006-2009. Jauron was a good, kind man and well-liked. I'll remember him fondly.

How do the duties and responsibilities of an offensive or defensive coordinator differ based on whether or not they are the play caller?

They're essentially the same except on game day, when they don't call plays.

KC from Orlando, FL

With Baalke gone, do you think we stop trading down in the first round? Who do you like at No. 5 for the Jaguars? If a coveted quarterback was at 5, do you think the Jags trade down? Thanks!

I expect the Jaguars' next general manager along with Coen and Boselli will explore trade options throughout the draft and do what's best for the franchise – which, by the way, is what former Jaguars General Manager Trent Baalke also did. And while your first question suggests that trading down in Round 1 is a negative, the Jaguars traded down twice in Round 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft and gathered draft selections while selecting wide receiver Brian Thomas – a move that hardly can considered negative. As for the Jaguars at No. 5 overall in the 2025 NFL Draft, I'm fine with the early projections of defensive tackle Mason Graham or cornerback Will Johnson of Michigan there. Both make sense. Would the Jaguars trade out of No. 5 for more selections if there was a quarterback there? I'm sure they would consider it. Whether they would do it or not would depend on how far they had to trade back and how much risk moving back would entail.

Why does every new coaching hire have a photo of himself in Jaguars outfits on the field in front of what appears to be a Jaguars crowd blurred out? Every one of them?

Because that's how the graphics people designed them.

This is going to be an awesome coaching staff or a completely disastrous staff. I don't know how many people have even heard of any member of the new staff. Had you heard about any of them before or are you as surprised as the fans?

I had heard of many of the members of the Jaguars' new coaching staff. The coordinators, Anthony Campanile on defense and Grant Ubinski on offense, are considered bright young coaching candidates. They were both going to be coordinators somewhere in the NFL in the very foreseeable future. As far as how many people had heard of them and whether fans were surprised at those hired, I confess I hadn't considered either of these to be issues before receiving this question – nor are they particularly important issues to be considered when a head coach is hiring a staff. It's always coaching in the NFL.

Hi, KOAGF. That sure was fast, getting the entire new coaching staff in place. Wait, I'm supposed to say, "What took so long."

The Jaguars on Friday announced their 2025 coaching staff, doing so two weeks after Coen was formally announced as coach. Two weeks is a nice, brisk pace. It's neither too slow nor too fast. There is no "too slow" or "too fast" when it comes to hiring a coaching staff. There is only getting it right and hiring a capable group of people.

Chris from Tampa, FL

Wow, people really do sweat out these coaching hires. Did any of these guys come with offensive linemen who can run block? If not, who cares? It won't make any difference.

Good eye.

I agree with "Brian from Round Rock." Khan is the root of the Jags' administrative issues. "Jaguars owner Shad Khan does not interfere in football operations." If the head coach, general manager and executive vice president of football operations all report to Khan directly and no one in the administrative loop, how does that qualify as staying out of football operation?

It's nice that you agree and you're certainly entitled to do so. When I say Khan doesn't interfere in football operations, I mean he doesn't interfere with the decisions made by and direction set by the people he hires to run football operations. That's as much as any owner can remain out of football operations.

I'm surprised no one commented about the NFL video that accompanied Armstead's award of the NFL Man of the Year. It's a yearly award so it should be based on what he did this year but most of the video showed his 49ers activities, not Jacksonville. Another slight of our Duval!.

I can't call that a slight. While Jaguars defensive end Arik Armstead indeed was named Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Thursday, and while the announcement video indeed featured much of Armstead's activities with the San Francisco 49ers, the Man of the Year Award is very much a cumulative award. Armstead spent nine seasons with the 49ers and has spent one in Jacksonville. It would be surprising if the video featured more of the one year than the nine.

Big Jags Fan from Jacksonville

Congratulations to Arik Armstead for winning the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. This prestigious honor recognizes unselfish donations of time, money and resources to better the lives of many people. The award transcends sports.

Indeed it does.

Gary from St. Augustine, FL

Even with a new coaching staff in place, you still suck.

It's always coaching staffs in the NFL.

Reuben from Pikesville, MD

I have no idea what sort of executive Tony Boselli will make. I do know that offensive linemen are some of the most intelligent football players, so I hope for the best. Whatever people want to say about Shad Khan, he is clearly doing his level best to make this team a success.

Khan always has done his best to make the Jaguars a success. He has supported the Jaguars and their decision-makers fully – up to and well beyond the level of many other NFL owner. That doesn't guarantee success. It does mean the effort is always there.

Roger from Whitehouse, FL

Do you know if Grant Udinski is going to remove the game-killing interception from the playbook?

I expect that will be on the one-sheet.

Rob from the duuuuuuuu

I was a little worried about my purchase of a Travon Walker rookie jersey in Years 1 and 2. That thing has aged like a fine wine! His 2024 season: 61 tackles, 10.5 sacks AND 13 tackles for loss! People are still talking trash. Has he ever even missed a game? There should be a weekly blooper show of tight ends trying to block him. One for Travon.

There wasn't much reason to worry on this front. Jaguars defensive end Travon Walker, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2022 NFL Draft, was good as a rookie and has steadily improved. One fer Walker.

Al from Orange Park, FL

What is the difference between a defensive backs coach and a secondary coach?

One has more letters than the other and is split into two words. Other than that, it's the same job and responsibilities.
