O-Zone: Cup o' joe

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it …

Charles from Savannah, GA

Is Trevor's injury significant? There are rumors that he will need surgery.

You're asking if Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence will undergo surgery on his left shoulder, which was reported as a possibility by various outlets Thursday. Lawrence practiced limited on Wednesday and Thursday after sustaining the injury in a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles this past Sunday. The Jaguars signed quarterback C.J. Beathard to the active roster from the Miami Dolphins' practice squad this week, meaning he will backup Mac Jones if Lawrence can't play. Signing Beathard in that manner means he will be on the roster for three weeks, so there's a long(ish) term feel to the move. And I would be surprised at this point if Lawrence plays against the Minnesota Vikings at EverBank Stadium Sunday. I've seen nothing official on surgery and don't sense that's imminent yet. The Jaguars are also 2-7, which means prudence could be an option moving forward. Stay tuned.

What about Lawrence has made you say several times that you're more optimistic about his development now more than ever? From the couch, he looks bad to meh the last calendar year, with a few good games the last month. But even with those, he has now had multiple halves of football where he has thrown for less than 30 yards. Can you be a franchise quarterback and throw for less than 30 yards in a half, multiple times?

This is a curious question because pretty much every time I have said or written that I am more optimistic about Lawrence than at any point in his career, I immediately have said or written why. I said this most pointedly last week following a 30-27 loss to the Green Bay Packers, and the reason was that Lawrence lifted teammates during that game to a degree I hadn't seen before. No, Lawrence has not been consistent enough over the last year or so. And yes, a quarterback can still develop into an elite player if he has a bad half or two. Overall … yes, I still believe strongly that he can be a high-end quarterback in the NFL.

Everyone seems to be harping on the defense. I think they played pretty solid. I mean sure, they've had some blown plays. But when the offense can't get a lead, can't get first downs and turns over the ball as much as we have, how good do you expect them to be?

Better than this.

Scott from Atlantic Beach, FL

When the franchise believes they are good and then go 2-7, that explains it all. Other than Trevor, this franchise doesn't have much going.

This actually isn't true. The Jaguars have several young players other than Lawrence who look very promising. Defensive end Travon Walker. Wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. To name two.

Tom from The Mean Streets of Nocatee

When I heard that Trevor was hurt my immediate reaction was "Dear lord, please don't let it be his back."

Lawrence isn't that guy. This isn't that situation.

Daniel from Johnston, IA

Has the change in defensive coordinator from last year been a positive move for the Jags? I still feel like the Jags' offense is doing enough to win but the defense is just really, really bad?

The Jaguars' defense for the most part hasn't been significantly improved from last season. From this view, it has been better at times against the run. It has not forced turnovers as well and the pass rush has been about the same. The group has not been very good in long-yardage situations – and it actually has been bad in that situation. The offense and defense have taken turns being OK and not quite good enough this season.

Andrew from Jacksonville

Is there any way the city and the Jags can move the construction dates up a year so we don't have to watch this team next season?

Andrew's got jokes.

Kei from Kitakyushu, Japan

Do you think Trevor will eventually turn into Matt Stafford, in the sense that he'll eventually win his share of big games, including maybe the Super Bowl ... on his next team?

I don't expect the Jaguars to part ways with Lawrence in the foreseeable future. I do think there's a trend ongoing of early-drafted quarterbacks having solid-to-very-good careers at second stops because teams are increasingly giving up on young quarterbacks well before the players have a chance to develop. I think that trend will continue because there's inordinate pressure on teams to make "final" decisions on early drafted quarterbacks.

It's funny that people write you messages telling you how you suck and they don't seem to realize that you clearly find these posts at least a little entertaining and are not bothered by their opinions. It's like they feel like they can hurt your feelings and get you to take back everything you said that offended their delicate disposition.

I am the king of all funk.

Bradley from Sparks, NV

My biggest concern is the Jags getting on a roll and winning six out of the last eight to finish 8-9 and Pederson and Taylor showing up on Khan's yacht in matching sailor uniforms to plead for another year. I feel like Pederson would be retained with seven or eight more wins and would be fired with five or fewer but six is hard to read. It's not out of the question with a fairly weak schedule for the last five games and they seem due a break or two like in 2022. Thoughts?

My thoughts are that I don't think Head Coach Doug Pederson and offensive coordinator Press Taylor have matching sailor uniforms. I don't expect the Jaguars to win six of their last eight games. They are beat up and they haven't shown the ability to win close games no matter the opponent. I don't know how that would be perceived by Owner Shad Khan, but I don't think there's a "number." I expect decisions to be made after the season based on many factors, and what Khan sees as best for the long-term future. I don't have a feel for all factors that will go into that decision, and my sense is all but a few people who tell you they do are lying.

Tony from Johns Creek, GA

O, at this point of this disappointing season I'd be happy just to beat the Titans.

Fair.

Trevor is tough and will do everything to play I'm sure, but I hope he shuts it down and gets healthy. If that means surgery, then make it happen. Trevor being healthy for training camp is the win now, not him battling through meaningless games with a staff/front office that likely won't be here next season.

Such conversations and debates are interesting. They also can be misleading and pointless without facts. Only a few people close to Lawrence and the team know the extent of his injury, and I suspect that will remain true for a while. Without such knowledge, there's no way to know if Lawrence should play Sunday. Or the week after that. Or the week after that. But if his injury is that significant … yes, there is a time when being ready for the offseason takes priority. Stay tuned.

Brian from Gainesville, FL

Big O, I know you frequently say that you don't tell fans how to feel, that fans fan and that's okay, etc. But in the present situation in which the Jags (and other teams) find themselves, where the season is basically over but for the "meaningless" games where the players will stay play hard but where a win actually hurts a team's future, what are your thoughts on how fans should process. How can fans really enjoy the rest of a season like this? It's not baseball where we are just looking for a relaxing day at the ballpark.

We're in Week 10. Root for the Jaguars to win until further notice.

Corey from Madison, WI

If I can only watch one more Jaguars play this season please let it be giving the ball to defensive end Travon Walker on a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line. Sorry, no question, that is all...

I'd click on that.

Mike from Cartersville (AKA Trevortown), GA

I'm tired of having a front row seat to history and documenting it. It used to be very entertaining. It's nor so funny any longer. I envy the sports journalists. Doesn't seem like a bad gig. I've known for years people who have held cameras in war zones. Those who chose to cover sports look like the big brain geniuses at this point. Do you wake up and drink your coffee and reflect on the good decision you made on this regularly? Because you should.

I'm forever sitting around, sipping coffee and congratulating myself on the glory that is my life. That's so me.
