LONDON – This was needed. Boy, was it needed.
The Jaguars on Sunday turned a difficult start into a convincing victory, beating the New England Patriots 32-16 in front of 86,651 at Wembley Stadium for their second victory in three games following an 0-4 start to the 2024 regular season.
This was needed because the Jaguars spent the week answering questions about effort, fragility and culture – legitimate questions following a 35-16 loss to the Chicago Bears at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last Sunday.
Jaguars players and coaches throughout the week spoke of energetic practices and not quitting on a frustrating season. After trailing 10-0 Sunday, the Jaguars scored three second-quarter touchdowns to take a 22-10 lead and come very close to clinching the game early in the second half against a rebuilding Patriots (1-6) team that lost a sixth consecutive game.
Sunday doesn't save the Jaguars' season. It doesn't answer all questions. But winning is a lot better than losing, and the Jaguars needed what happened at Wembley Sunday. Boy, did they.
Let's get to it …

Yay, we are officially not the worst team in the NFL.
This drips with sarcasm, which is understandable considering the disappointing nature of the Jaguars' season to date – but perhaps unfair considering the Jaguars' performance on Sunday. While the Jaguars have played poorly too often this season, the victory over the Patriots was solid. It featured a strong second quarter and a very strong drive over the third and fourth quarters that could/should have secured the game. The Jaguars' defense also capably closed the game in the fourth quarter. Maybe that's a foundation for something cool moving forward. Maybe not. But for a day at least, it was good.

Yo, Grizz! So, we trade a defensive tackle to make room for our young defensive tackles, then make our second-round defensive tackle inactive?? What????
Yes, that's kind of sort of what happened. In a way.

I'm liking the teal flags and jerseys. Teal is always good to see.
This was the much-ballyhooed, sometimes-sarcastic, often-legible First Email of the Game. It wasn't particularly ballyhooed or sarcastic, but it was legible – and there was a good bit of teal at historic Wembley Stadium Sunday. Cool stuff.

Wow, can't believe that they gave up an easy first-drive TD. Does the defense practice during the week or just watch film?
This shouldn't be all that surprising; the Jaguars have allowed far too many first-drive scores this season. The defense practices and watches film each week.

Still waiting for this "attacking defense" to attack.
The Jaguars didn't play as well defensively as one might have liked Sunday. It played significantly better following the first two drives.

No. 4 in, it's a run. No. 2 in, it's a pass. "Kill, Kill" audible to run. What am I missing with regards to super predictable offense?
The Jaguars do seem to lean more toward running with running back Tank Bigsby in the game and are more balanced sometimes when he's not. This is sort of how it is with young running backs until they are more capable as receivers and pass blockers.

The crowd was so much louder for the Patriots defense than ours. Gotta love these home games...
The Patriots indeed have had a lot of success and are a six-decade-plus franchise. They do have a large, supportive fan base that travels well. But to say that the crowd was far louder Sunday for the Patriots than the Jaguars doesn't feel right. That wasn't how it sounded from this writer's seat.

I feel like the Jaguars win the coin toss often. Is that more attributed to the players or the coaching?
It's always coaching in the NFL.

Is this what rock bottom feels like or are we still falling?
This came in the first quarter …

Is this what rebirth looks like or is there still growing to do?
… and this came in the second quarter.

More teal please. And please tell Doug the visor had a good run, but he can't go back to it now.
If I see him on the plane, I'll mention it. I doubt I'll see him. His seat is cool. I envy it. I envy many things.

Taaaaaaaaaank!
Bigsby rushed for 118 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries Sunday. This was a second 100-yard rushing game in the past three games, and further evidence that the 2023 third-round selection is a very capable NFL running back. Credit to Bigsby for pushing through what at times was a very difficult rookie season. Good on him. Well-deserved. Cool story.

This is fun!
Winning is cool. Fans like it.
