Game Report, 2024 Week 17: Jaguars 20, Titans 13

Week 17 - Game Report Thumbnail

JACKSONVILLE – This was sloppy and wet – and a little meaningless in a way.

In other very real ways, it was kind of cool.

Mac Jones threw two touchdowns and won in front of his hometown fans, and Brian Thomas Jr. continued a standout rookie season – and who cared if it was wet and messy during a 20-13 victory over the Tennessee Titans at EverBank Stadium in front of an announced 61,999 Sunday?

The Jaguars won – and swept their AFC South rivals – in the 2024 home finale.

"Just a complete football game," Head Coach Doug Pederson called it, with Jaguars defensive end Travon Walker adding: "It feels good to get a win."

"We know that they don't like us and that's in the division, so we always want to come out of that with a dub," added Walker, who had one of three Jaguars sacks Sunday.

Jones' two-yard second-quarter touchdown pass to wide receiver Parker Washington gave the Jaguars a 10-0 lead and his 11-yard fourth-quarter touchdown pass to Thomas gave the Jaguars a 20-10 lead after the Titans cut into the lead in the second and third quarters.

"I'm just excited to get this W," Jaguars running back Travis Etienne Jr. said. "It just feels so much better coming into work the next day being able to be around my family and be happy. I'm tired of being sad."

DE Travon Walker (44) and DE Josh Hines-Allen (41)

Defensive end Josh Hines-Allen turned in one of his stronger games of the season, and the Jaguars' defense held off a late Titans rally.

"We put the last couple of seconds on our back; it feels great," Hines-Allen said after the Jaguars' second victory in nine games.

A 28-yard field goal by Titans kicker Matthew Wright cut the Jaguars' lead to 20-13 with 2:02 remaining, with the Titans driving to the Jaguars 26 on their final possession. Jaguars safety Antonio Johnson knocked down Titans quarterback Mason Rudolph's pass to wide receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine at the goal line on fourth-and-10 from there with :09 remaining.

The Jaguars won giveaway-takeaway 1-0 Sunday, with Jones going a second consecutive game without an interception after throwing seven in the previous three games.

"It has been a minute since we've done that – really in all three phases," Pederson said. "Even down to the two-minute situations at the end of the half and game. Our players did a great job of execution. It's exciting for all those guys."

The Jaguars are now 3-9 this season in games decided by seven points or less.

"I don't live in the what-ifs," Etienne said. "We didn't make those plays earlier in the year. I'm just happy we're making them now. Hopefully that gives us the confidence to make them next year. We just have to find ways to continue to win games."

Jones, making his sixth start in the last seven games for injured starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence, completed 15 of 22 passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. Jones, who attended the Bolles School locally, won a start for the first time at 'the Bank.

Thomas, the Jaguars' standout rookie wide receiver and the No. 23 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, registered his third consecutive 90-plus-yard receiving game with seven receptions for 91 yards and one touchdown.

The victory gave the Jaguars (4-12) – who were eliminated from the AFC South chase with five regular-season games remaining this season – a season sweep over the Titans (3-13) for a second time in three seasons. The Jaguars are 5-1 against their AFC South rivals in Head Coach Doug Pederson's three seasons as head coach.

"To sweep a divisional team is huge," Hines-Allen said.

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Tennessee Titans

RB Travis Etienne Jr. (1)

The Jaguars beat the Titans, 10-6, in Nashville in Week 14.

"We don't like those guys and they don't like us," Etienne said of the Titans. "We just had to go out and handle business."

Rudolph completed 19 of 31 passes for 193 yards and one touchdown with one interception.

The Jaguars registered one takeaway and three sacks Sunday, with linebacker Devin Lloyd registering a second-quarter interception. Defensive end Travon Walker and Hines-Allen each registered sacks, as did rookie defensive tackle Maason Smith.

The Jaguars now have (nine) takeaways this season with 31 sacks. They entered Sunday last in the NFL in takeaways and tied for 30th in sacks. Walker has a team-high 9.5 sacks this season and Hines-Allen is second with eight.

"We've got a lot to play for and coach for," Pederson said. "You put your best foot forward and give it everything you have during the week. When you're rewarded like we were today, it makes it sweeter."
