O-Zone Late Night, Week 18: Colts 26, Jaguars 23

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – That's a wrap.

The Jaguars' disappointing 2024 season is over, and the nature of a 26-23 overtime loss to the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium in Sunday's regular-season finale mattered little when it came to how this season will be remembered.

It was by any measure a disastrous season, lost seemingly from the beginning and certainly by the time a rough September became starts of 0-4 and 1-5. That the Jaguars ten lost eight of their last 10 games, with the only victories in that span over Tennessee, just solidified the feeling.

This was tough from the start and got tougher. It was the sort of season that brings change, with only Owner Shad Khan as of this writing knowing what that might mean.

There were positives. The late-season grit. The emergence of rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. Beyond that …

Well, beyond that, there wasn't much. Now, the season is over. Now, we wait.

Thank God, it's over. Now for the exciting part, a clean sweep.

Stay tuned.

Well, John. This is our last opportunity to witness the Greatest Jaguar Team Ever. Fire Everybody.

This was the much-ballyhooed, sometimes-tread-worn, oft-bizarre First Email of the Game. It came just before the Colts scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Joe Flacco to wide receiver Alec Pierce seventy seconds into the game. This was just around the time the Jaguars announced that safety Andre Cisco had sustained a groin injury during warmups. It was that sort of year.

I felt like I was watching the first preseason game of 2025. Evaluating talent and absolutely meaningless.

Welcome to the final five games of the Jaguars' 2024 regular season. They played absolutely meaningless games since being eliminated from AFC South contention on December 1. That's it. That's the meal. It wasn't a good one.

Gary from Fleming Island

Why didn't they challenge? Thomas deserved that touchdown but they didn't throw the flag.

You're referencing a situation in the first quarter Sunday in which Thomas appeared to maybe have scored on what was ruled a 17-yard reception to the Jaguars 2. I thought Thomas might have scored. Thomas thought he might have scored. Because it was first-and-goal at the 2-yard line, you don't challenge unless you're sure of winning it – and the Jaguars crossed the goal line before going out of bounds. Running back Tank Bigsby's one-yard run tied the game 7-7 two plays later.

Mighty O. Now that we thankfully are finished with the season, when do you expect to hear about changes in the coaching staff and general manager?

Imminently.

My son and I flew to Indy for the game today. Surprisingly, we did not see our $275 million quarterback on the sidelines. I would have thought he could be helping the backup, giving his thoughts to the offensive coordinator, and/or finding other ways to be a team leader. Did he have another engagement? Or do we need to pay him an extra $10 million bonus to show up for games in which he is not playing?

Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence underwent shoulder surgery on December 18. Lawrence attended games after he was injured until the surgery. It is not uncommon for players who have undergone surgery recently to not travel with the team.

John from Ramsey, NJ

OOOF… there's a reason Mac Jones is a backup. It's a shame he couldn't reach Thomas on the deep post. Not to sound like Pinocchio in the GEICO commercial, but this team has potential. Just need to get better schemes and play calling. We're just too predictable. Will coaching really fix this?

The Jaguars do have potential. This roster is not bereft of talent. I do not remotely believe that just changing coaches is the answer.

Since we're talking about overtime rules, why not prohibit field goals on each team's first possession?

Because the NFL within reason wants overtime to be as close as possible to regulation. The more you rig the rules, the further you get from football.

This may be the most boring, inept, dink-and-punt offense I have seen in years from this team.

Really? To me, the Jaguars' offense late in the season looked like a lot of previous Jaguars offenses when they have had few top-level skill players, an offensive line that struggles at times to run block and a quarterback whose arm isn't the strongest. It looks like most NFL offenses look when backups are surrounded by backups late in the season. When NFL offenses struggle, play-calling gets uncreative because it's hard enough to do the basics well in professional football.

Glenn from Tampa, FL

Finally. This was not the most fun I've ever had … but at least it's over now.

This season was not the must fun I've ever had, either.
