JACKSONVILLE – This was a case of good timing. Really good.
Trevor Lawrence on Sunday turned in one his best career performances – and absolutely his best performance of the season. He did so following a difficult week replete with noise and more than a touch of criticism.
He also turned 25.
"It's a good birthday," he said.
Lawrence, in his fourth season as the Jaguars' starting quarterback, completed 28 of 34 passes for 371 yards and two touchdowns with an interception in a 37-34 victory over the Indianapolis Colts at EverBank Stadium Sunday afternoon.
"He ran the offense and saw the field well," Head Coach Doug Pederson said of Lawrence.
Lawrence's previous high yardage total this season was 220, and he had struggled in a loss to the Houston Texans last Sunday when he missed multiple open receivers for potential touchdowns. The Jaguars entered Sunday 0-4.
"Trevor's the same guy every day, honestly," Pederson said. "I didn't I didn't really see anything [different in Lawrence] other than him working through some of the issues we've had in the first month of the season. Listen: Trevor's a professional, he's our guy and we continue to help him and support him and then do everything we can for him.
"He just has to understand that we're going to do that and then as quarterback just go out and do your job because he did that today."
Lawrence completed eight passes of 12 or more yards Sunday. His 85-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. gave the Jaguars a 10-7 lead with 7:12 remaining in the second quarter. His 61-yarder to wide receiver Christian Kirk came in the fourth quarter and set up a four-yard touchdown pass to tight end Brenton Strange that gave the Jaguars a 27-17 lead with 9:59 remaining.
"It felt good to connect on some of those this week," Lawrence said. "I felt like we had a great plan, and we had some opportunities for those shots. It all worked out. We got the right looks. Guys did a good job on the outside winning."
Said Kirk, "Nobody deserves it more. He weathers the storm; he doesn't blink, and we all have all the confidence in the world that he's going to come out here and have one of those games. I'm thankful that he did and when he does, good things happen for us. I know it's great for him and his confidence and for the confidence of the team, that he's going to lead us and get us to where we want to go."
Lawrence on Sunday completed 10 of 12 passes in the fourth quarter for 117 yards and a touchdown. The Jaguars on their final possession drove 39 yards on eight plays, with kicker Cam Little converting a 49-yard field goal with :17 remaining.
Lawrence completed three of three passes for 34 yards on the drive, including a 14-yard completion to Kirk that moved the Jaguars into field-goal range.
"It's always good to use these games to build confidence," Lawrence said. "It gives you confidence looking forward, I think for myself and for the team. It was good for us to continue to deal with the adversity and to find a way to finish when things didn't go perfect.
"The end of game didn't go perfect, but we found a way to get the ball in position and have a shot for a game-winning field goal and Cam made it. That's going to make us better as a team, too. Even the first win of the season was tough. It came down to the very end and we had to earn it."
QUOTABLE WEEK 5 POSTGAME MOMENTS
- Lawrence: "We knew if we just kept plugging away, we'd hit some. That's what it is. There's no special or crazy formula. It's just continuing to do your job and trusting the guys next to you. We have some momentum now. We just have to take it and run with it and just trying to get one more this week."
NOTABLE WEEK 5 GAME MOMENTS
- Pederson on Sunday lauded the Jaguars' offensive line, which allowed no sacks on Sunday in a game in which the Jaguars rushed for 126 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries. Second-year running back Tank Bigsby rushed for 101 yards and touchdowns of 65 and 19 yards on 13 carries. "This is the second week in a row really that our line has played good as a unit," Pederson said, noting that the starting line of left tackle Cam Robinson, left guard Ezra Cleveland, center Mitch Morse, right guard Brandon Scherff and right tackle Anton Harrison has started all five games. "There's continuity. They start learning to play together. That's what you're seeing. These last couple of weeks, you're seeing that. It was a great game by those guys again today. There's consistency with playing together and working through your issues that helped us win this game today."
