LAS VEGAS, Nevada – The struggles were real. The fight was, too.
The positive for the Jaguars was the latter, but that wasn't enough to overcome the former – or to make their first trip to the Nevada desert a successful one.
Tank Bigsby and Brian Thomas Jr. scored touchdowns – and Thomas set yet another franchise rookie record – but the Jaguars squandered a fourth-quarter lead and couldn't respond in a 19-14 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium Sunday.
"You have to understand that that's the NFL," Jaguars quarterback Mac Jones said. "Almost all the games go to this situation – and how can we just not be in that situation? There were a lot of self-inflicted errors.
"It always comes down to one play and you wish the result will be different."
The Jaguars lost the turnover margin, 2-0, Sunday and were penalized eighth time for 60 yards as they lost for the ninth time this season by a score or less.
"The guys do play hard, but the mistakes, penalties … things that just kind of have held us back all season," Head Coach Doug Pederson said. "For coaches, players, everybody, it's the frustrating part. Until we get that corrected, obviously, there are going to be a lot of long days. We have to get it fixed."
Running back Ameer Abdullah's seven-yard run with 11:26 remaining in the fourth quarter gave the Raiders a 19-14 lead, and the Raiders held the Jaguars scoreless on two fourth-quarter possessions.
Jones' eight-yard pass to running back D'Ernest Johnson on fourth-and-11 from the Jaguars 38 with :52 remaining ended the Jaguars' final drive.
Thomas, the No. 23 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft and a rising star at wide receiver, gave the Jaguars a 14-13 lead with a 62-yard touchdown reception from Jones late in the third quarter. He caught nine passes for 131 yards and a touchdown Sunday.
Thomas in the first quarter set the franchise record for receptions in a season by a rookie after having already set single-receptions and receiving touchdowns rookie records.
The Jaguars (3-12) lost for a seventh time in eight games. The Raiders (3-12) snapped a 10-game losing streak.
Bigsby rushed for 50 yards on 12 carries, and his one-yard touchdown run gave the Jaguars a first-quarter lead.
The Raiders overcame that early Jaguars lead to lead 13-7 at halftime by scoring on three consecutive second-quarter drives – then entered halftime with momentum after safety Thomas Harper recovered a fumble by Jaguars tight end Brenton Strange at the Las Vegas 33-yard line with :09 remaining in the second quarter.
Jones, making his fifth start in six games for injured starter Trevor Lawrence, completed 25 of 39 passes for 247 yards and one touchdowns with no interceptions. Raiders quarterback Aidan O'Connell completed 24 of 38 passes for 257 yards and no touchdowns with no interceptions.
The Jaguars registered no takeaways and two sacks, with defensive tackle Maason Smith (first quarter) and defensive end Arik Armstead (first quarter) registering sacks.
"I know for the guys who haven't been around it's hard," Jaguars sixth-year veteran safety Andrew Wingard said. "I've been through this stuff many times. You just have to go play ball and know that your tape is your resume and that everybody's watching the tape.
"That's what you have to do. It stinks. I do everything in my power to scream at guys and cuss and say, 'Let's go,' but it is what it is."
