Game Report, 2024 Week 11: Lions 52, Jaguars 6

WEEK 11 GAME REPORT THUMBNAIL

DETROIT, Mich. – This was rough from the start.

About as rough as possible, actually.

The Jaguars, whose 2024 season largely has been defined by close losses decided late in games, struggled offensively and defensively from the start in a big way Sunday afternoon – with the surging, streaking Detroit Lions dominating early and pulling away easily for a 52-6 victory in front of 64,273 at Ford Field.

"It's difficult to find words," Head Coach Doug Pederson said.

Lions quarterback Jared Goff threw four touchdown passes and the Lions scored touchdowns on their first seven possessions, a streak that ended on the series after Goff left the game. They held a 575-137 yardage advantage after taking a 49-6 lead early in the fourth quarter after Goff's fourth touchdown pass.

"Right now, it's hard," Jaguars defensive end Josh Hines-Allen said. "It's hard to talk about it. It's hard to be a part of it. It's hard to explain it and say, 'That's the reason why.' Very angry."

The Lions scored on every possession until kneeling to run out the clock at the end of the game. They outgained the Jaguars 645-170, with the Jaguars now 2-9 entering a Week 12 bye that Pederson said "obviously comes at the right time."

"Our guys need some time away," he said. "We need to refresh, recharge … coaches and players. Everybody's so disappointed, frustrated and angry. It's the emotion of how much you put into the week and then playing like we did. It's frustrating."

Said linebacker Devin Lloyd, "The bye week is coming at a good time."

The Jaguars (2-9) have lost four consecutive games and 14 of 17 dating to last season. The Lions have won eight consecutive games.

"It just wasn't our day today," Jaguars quarterback Mac Jones said. "That's the NFL. We have to keep working."

The loss was the most-one-sided in Jaguars history. The previous worst loss was 44-0 to the Detroit Lions in Week 16 of their 1995 expansion season.

"There's no excuse for us not being able to execute," Lloyd said. "They're a great team. They played great today. Things didn't go our way today. It's a tough pill to swallow. There's no excuse. We have to execute."

The highlight for the Jaguars Sunday: Rookie kicker Cam Little's 59-yard field goal that gave them a 3-0 first-possession lead and tied the franchise record for longest field goal.

The Lions methodically took control early, driving 70, 93, 63 and 84 yards on their four first-half possessions with short touchdown runs by running backs David Montgomery (one yard, six yards) and Jahmyr Gibbs (two yards) capping the first three possessions.

Goff's 27-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown gave the Lions a 28-3 lead with 2:46 remaining in the first half.

Goff threw two more touchdowns in the third quarter – to wide receivers Jameson Williams and Brock Wright – and finished completing 24 of 29 passes for 412 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. He had a perfect 158.3 passer rating.

Jones, starting a second consecutive game in place of injured starter Trevor Lawrence (left shoulder), completed 17 of 29 passes for 138 yards and no touchdown with one interception.

"I could have done a better job on definitely a few plays," Jones said. "Once we all do that together as 11, we'll have success. We definitely have a group that's going to fight. You have to keep going. No one's going to feel sorry for you."

The Jaguars did not have a takeaway or a sack Sunday.

"We need to take the first part of the [bye] week and reflect on what's been good and what hasn't been good," Pederson said. "That's the opportunity we have. We have six games left and it will be exciting. There's still an opportunity there."
