Scout's Take: NFL Media and Jaguars Media Analyst Bucky Brooks On Jets vs. Jaguars

1218 Scout's Take Article - Week 15

JACKSONVILLE – In a weekly feature for the 2024 season, NFL Media and Jaguars Media Analyst Bucky Brooks breaks down the Jaguars' performance in a 32-25 Week 15 victory loss to the New York Jets at EverBank Stadium.

BIG IMPRESSION

  • The Jaguars could not knock off the Jets, but the strong performances of their young players could lead to a promising future. Wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., tight end Brenton Strange, wide receiver Parker Washington and running back Tank Bigsby flashed star qualities in helping the offense race up and down the field against one of the league's most talented defenses. Though another woeful defensive performance undermined the quartet's effort, the play of the Jaguars' youngsters should inspire hope in Duval.

KEYS TO VICTORY

  • The Jaguars' defensive struggles continue to show up in inopportune moments. The combination of misalignments, blown assignments and faulty execution results in too many explosive plays to overcome. In addition, the lack of a consistent pass rush and poor tackling makes it nearly impossible for the defense to get off the field in crucial moments. With the offense unable to light up the scoreboard with a backup quarterback in the game, the defense's woes make it hard for the Jaguars to chalk up wins despite their best efforts.

MAC'S MOMENTS

  • The hometown hero could not write a fairy tale ending against the Jets. Despite playing winning football for most of the game, Jones' costly mistakes (two interceptions) and questionable situational awareness (poor red-zone execution) kept the Jaguars from maximizing their scoring potential in Week 15. With the offense forced to settle for field goals on multiple occasions, the Jaguars' eighth one-score loss is partially the result of inconsistent execution from the backup quarterback.

UNSUNG HERO

  • Strange could emerge as an X-factor for the Jaguars' offense in 2025. The ultra-athletic pass catcher showed promise in an 11-catch, 73-yard effort that showed his potential as a middle-of-the-field threat. With Strange serving as a dynamic complement to BTJ, the Jaguars have a young 1-2 punch who should flourish when the veterans return to action next season.

OFFENSIVELY SPEAKING

  • The Jaguars' offense raced up and down the field against the Jets. The Jaguars forced an AFC opponent to play on their terms by utilizing a ball-control approach built on a quick-rhythm passing game (screens, quicks and isolation routes) and a surprisingly effective ground attack. Though the lack of consistency in the red zone prevented the Jaguars from seizing complete control of the game, the overall play from the offense should have resulted in a win in front of the home fans.

DEFENSIVELY SPEAKING

  • The defense continues to disappoint in 2024. The unit failed miserably in crucial moments against the Jets, displaying the mental mistakes that have plagued the unit since Week 1. From the multiple blown coverages against Jets wide receiver Davante Adams to the shoddy tackling on the perimeter and the non-existent pass rush, the Jaguars' defense failed to get it done in Week 15. With defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen running out of tweaks, adjustments and personnel, the Jaguars' defensive turnaround must come from improved player development and game plan execution.
