JACKSONVILLE – In a weekly feature for the 2024 season, NFL Media and Jaguars Media analyst Bucky Brooks breaks down the Jaguars' performance in a 28-23 Week 9 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pa.
BIG IMPRESSION
- The Jaguars continue to give away winnable games with self-inflicted errors that have consistently plagued their play this season. Turnovers, penalties and big plays due to poor execution and blown assignments have cost the Jaguars dearly in pivotal moments. Against the Eagles, the offense turned the ball over in the end zone on a 50-50 ball that should have never been thrown. In addition, the offense's inability to convert several medium-distanced third downs into first downs. With the defense surrendering big plays on third-and-forevers (third down and 15-plus yards), the Jaguars missed a chance to knock off an NFC heavyweight. Moreover, the team failed to keep their flickering playoff hopes alive with a big win on the road.
KEYS TO VICTORY
- The Jaguars suffered their fifth loss of the season by five points or fewer due to their self-inflicted errors and miscues. The combination of turnovers, penalties and big plays allowed the Eagles to win without playing at their best. From wide receiver Austin Trammell's fumbled punt return to a pair of quarterback Trevor Lawrence interceptions, the Jaguars gifted the Eagles extra possessions and thwarted scoring chances. In addition, the Jaguars' faulty defensive execution on third-and-long situations in the red zone crushed the team's chances of pulling off an upset. In a close game where points are coveted at a premium, the Jaguars enabled the Eagles to steal points with their costly mistakes in crucial moments.

TREVOR'S TIME
- Despite a gusty second-half performance that helped the Jaguars climb back into the game, Lawrence did not play well enough to win against an NFC heavyweight. The former No.1 overall pick could not find a consistent rhythm and misfired on a few throws that could have shifted the game's momentum. In addition, the costly end-zone interception with less than two minutes remaining in the game showed a lack of situational awareness from the franchise quarterback. Those losses have provided plenty of lessons for the Jaguars' QB1; it is time for the young gunslinger to come through in some of these clutch moments to help them break out of their slump.
UNSUNG HERO
- Defensive end Travon Walker dominated the game against a talented Eagles offensive line. The former No.1 overall pick notched seven tackles, a pair of tackles for loss, and a scoop-and-score touchdown that showcased his awareness as a playmaker. The 6-foot-5, 272-pounder has become a disruptive force, as evidenced by his weekly splash plays.
OFFENSIVELY SPEAKING
- The Jaguars continue to start slowly with three-and-outs and meager production in the first half of games. Against the Eagles, it was more of the same, with the offense mustering just a single first down in the opening half. The putrid production prevented the Jaguars from capitalizing on a solid defensive effort in the first half. Moreover, it forced the Jaguars to "chase" points in the second half and abandon a balanced game plan that might have enabled the team to control the game's flow.
DEFENSIVELY SPEAKING
- Despite a solid defensive effort on the scoreboard, the Jaguars allowed too many yards on the ground and through the air. The Eagles totaled 447 yards with nearly a 50-50 split in rushing (237) and passing (210) production. The balanced approach from the NFC heavyweight spotlights the Jaguars' inability to control the game and dictate the terms. Without the Jaguars neutralizing running back Saquon Barkley or quarterback Jalen Hurts as runners, the Eagles were free to attack, utilizing various run and pass concepts. In addition, the Jaguars' poor execution and questionable situational awareness resulted in too many "explosives" in crucial moments, leading to easy scores for the opponent. While the defensive effort was commendable, the performance and production remain below the winning standard.
