Bucky Brooks Analyzes Jacksonville's Performance in Week 3 Loss to the Bills

JACKSONVILLE – In a weekly feature for the 2024 season, NFL Media and Jaguars Media Analyst Bucky Brooks breaks down the Jaguars' performance in a 47-10 Week 3 loss to the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, N.Y.

BIG IMPRESSION

  • The Jaguars suffered an embarrassing loss on primetime to the Bills. The lopsided affair is a wakeup call for a team that entered the season with lofty playoff aspirations but has stumbled to an 0-3 start. While the effort and enthusiasm have been there for the Jaguars, the inconsistent execution has prevented the team from playing at a high level. Against the Bills, the Jaguars looked overwhelmed and outmatched by a team playing at a championship level. From the opening snap to the final whistle, the Jaguars could not match the Bills' intensity, focus and execution in any phase. In addition, the Bills' dominance suggests the Jaguars are not close to being a team that can compete with the heavyweights in the AFC.

KEYS TO VICTORY

  • The Bills outsmarted and outplayed the Jaguars on Monday Night Football in front of a national audience. The Josh Allen-led offense started the party with six straight scoring drives, utilizing an assortment of crossing routes and pick plays to expose and exploit the Jaguars' man-heavy coverage tendencies. With a non-existent pass rush failing to disrupt Allen's timing within the pocket, the MVP frontrunner teased and tormented the defense with pinpoint throws and timely scrambles that enabled the Bills to move the chains consistently. As Trevor Lawrence and Co. slogged through a disappointing effort that kept the Jaguars from turning the game into a shootout between a pair of loaded offenses, the Bills wore down a defense that could not keep up with the frenetic pace or handle the flawless execution.

TREVOR'S TIME

  • Lawrence did not bring his "A game" in a matchup against an MVP candidate playing at an unbelievable level. Despite his best efforts to turn around a sagging offense, the fourth-year pro could not find his rhythm from the pocket. Lawrence misfired on several "layups" that should have been easy completions for a quarterback expected to play like a top-five player. While the protection around him has not been up to par, and his playmakers have been inconsistent, the fourth-year pro must play better than the effort (completed 21 of 38 passes for 178 with a touchdown and an interception) we witnessed on Monday night.

UNSUNG HERO

  • Wide receiver Christian Kirk finally got untracked as the Jaguars' No. 1 receiver against the Bills. The veteran snagged eight passes for 79 yards on various option routes and seams that enabled Lawrence to work the middle of the field. Though his numbers did not impact this game, it should give the quarterback and pass-catcher a little momentum heading into a pivotal division matchup in Week 4.

OFFENSIVELY SPEAKING

  • The Jaguars got whipped by an energetic defense playing at a breakneck pace in front of its home fans. The Bills' defense dominated the trenches with Von Miller, Ed Oliver, A.J. Epenesa and Gregory Rousseau taking turns whipping the Jaguars' offense at the point of attack. The offensive line had no answers for the Bills' energetic unit or the clever scheme deployed by Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott's staff designed to keep Lawrence guessing from the pocket. With safety Damar Hamlin and his backfield mates showing various pre-snap looks before blanketing receivers on the perimeter, the Bills put a chokehold on the Jaguars before they tapped out after halftime.

DEFENSIVELY SPEAKING

  • Credit Joe Brady and Allen for outfoxing Jaguars defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen on Monday. The Bills' offensive coordinator and QB1 crafted a plan loaded with pre-snap motions and shifts that created mismatches all over the field. The clever utilization of a few hybrid playmakers put the Jaguars in a bind when motions or shifts placed them in the backfield against overmatched linebackers on wheel routes. The combination of play design and perfectly deployed personnel overwhelmed the Jaguars' defense, resulting in a spectacular offensive showing in prime time. With future opponents likely to copy the Bills' blueprint, Nielsen must come up with answers quickly to avoid another poor performance next week.
