JACKSONVILLE – He's sore and uncertain.
That's not particularly new for Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence, but the soreness and uncertainty this week is significant enough for some significant roster machinations.
That's the storyline this week. Stay tuned.
"I'm going to do everything I can to be out there," Lawrence said Wednesday.
Lawrence spoke to the media Wednesday afternoon as the Jaguars (2-7) prepared to play the Minnesota Vikings (6-2) at EverBank Stadium Sunday. This came hours after the Jaguars signed quarterback C.J. Beathard – Lawrence's backup from 2021-2023 – from the Miami Dolphins' practice squad.
Lawrence sustained a left shoulder this past Sunday in a loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and practiced limited Wednesday. Mac Jones, the starter for the New England Patriots the past three seasons, is the Jaguars' backup quarterback.
"Trevor's sore, and it gives us assurance," Head Coach Pederson said of the Beathard signing. "Mac is still the No. 2 and prepares each week to play.
"Now we have another veteran quarterback on the roster."
The Jaguars acquired Jones in a trade with the Patriots this past offseason.
"As a backup quarterback, you have to be ready," Jones said Wednesday. "It's the same as every week. You plan out your week as a starter. I've been fortunate to kind of adjust that each week and figure out what works for me.
"Whether you're taking the first snap, taking 10 snaps, zero, sixty, fifty or seventy … it doesn't matter. You have to take the mentality, 'Hey, I dd all the work and I feel comfortable. I've gotten the reps visually or however you get them.' Then you just let it rip."
Pederson on Wednesday was asked if Lawrence would play Sunday.
"I can't answer that today, not sitting here Wednesday," Pederson said.
Lawrence said he didn't want to provide a specific date this week to know if he can play Sunday.
"I want to be able to feel comfortable and feel like I can play my best and get everything I need to help my team," Lawrence said. "I just want to feel comfortable and feel like I can play my best and get everything I need to help our team win. That's what the decision comes down to at the end of the day.
"That's where my mind is and what I'm thinking about – is what's best for the team.
Beathard was in training camp this season with Lawrence and Jones before being released after sustaining an injury in a Week 2 preseason victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. An eight-year NFL veteran, Beathard spent his first four seasons with the San Francisco 49ers and won his lone Jaguars start – a 26-0 Week 17 2023 victory over the Carolina Panthers.
"It's kind of like a second home to me," Beathard said of Jacksonville. "I have a house here. Everyone has welcomed me with open arms. It feels like I was just here. I was excited. It's a chance to be on the 53. To be back here was a great opportunity."
Pederson said re-signing Beathard "strengthens our roster, strengthens that room."
"We felt like we had a really good quarterback room with the three guys," Pederson said of Beathard. "C.J. got hurt there in camp and we had to let him go, but we definitely wanted to at some point get him back here."
The Jaguars under NFL rules must keep Beathard on the active roster for at least three games because they signed him from an opponent's practice squad. Pederson said the Jaguars could retain all three quarterbacks on the active roster moving forward.
"Maybe we'll carry them for a little while," Pederson said. "It's an opportunity to bolster the roster."
Lawrence during his career often has played through injuries, playing through a sprained toe in 2022 and playing through knee, shoulder, ankle and head injuries in various games midway through and late in the 2023 season.
"It's like when I've been dinged up in the past," Lawrence said. "I learned a lot through my few years of just dealing with injuries as the season goes on – what's the best way to do that, how to still prepare and get the amount the right amount of work in that you need to get. Every injury is different. Sometimes you can get more work in the other the other weeks.
"I've been through it. I think I have some experience. I know what I felt like helped me in the past. I know what I felt like I maybe lacked a little more from past experience, too. It's part of this business, part of this game. Everybody has to find their own way to work through injuries and to get themselves ready to play on Sunday."
