JACKSONVILLE – Time and circumstances made it make sense.
Head Coach Doug Pederson on Friday spoke to the media for the first time since the Jaguars placed quarterback Trevor Lawrence on injured reserve this week – and that's what Pederson said most prompted the move:
Even if it wasn't ideal, it had to happen now.
"It's never a good time, but if there is a time, this would be it," he said.
Pederson, speaking to the media in advance of Sunday’s road game against the Tennessee Titans, spoke extensively of Lawrence – who was placed on injured reserve Wednesday after sustaining a concussion in a loss to the Houston Texans this past week.
Lawrence had missed the Jaguars' previous two games with a left – non-throwing – shoulder injury sustained in a Week 9 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Pederson said Lawrence was placed on injured reserve more for the shoulder issues than the concussion.
"The right decision right now is to go ahead and just shut him down and let him get fully healed," Pederson said.
Lawrence remains in the NFL's concussion protocol, with Pederson calling placing Lawrence on injured reserve a "chance for him to get healthy right now as he looks into the offseason and next season as well, getting healthy."
"Our main focus right now is to make sure he's 100 percent and getting healthy and getting himself ready for the offseason," Pederson said, adding that Lawrence's shoulder did not get worse in the loss to the Texans.
"He didn't take any shots or hits on it," Pederson said.
Pederson shoulder surgery has not yet been scheduled for Lawrence "that he knows of," adding that Lawrence must clear concussion protocol before surgery.
"We're going to make sure that's cleared first before anything is scheduled," he said, adding that Lawrence is progressing through the protocol.
"He's moving right along," he said.
NOTABLE
- Punter Logan Cooke (left knee) and long snapper Ross Matiscik (hamstring) were listed as questionable on the final injury report of the week Friday, with Matiscik working limited in practice Friday after missing practice Wednesday and Thursday. Cooke missed practice all three days. Linebacker Yasir Abdullah (hamstring) and cornerback Tyson Campbell (thigh) also were listed as questionable after working limited Friday. The other players listed on the injury report this week – offensive lineman Brandon Scherff (knee/shoulder) and wide receiver Parker Washington (shoulder) – were listed without status and are therefore expected to be available Sunday.
QUOTABLE
- Pederson on the Jaguars' 2-10 record and being eliminated from the postseason with five regular-season games remaining: "Obviously, disappointing. It's not what I expected, it's not what the players expected, the team. A lot of high expectations obviously coming out of preseason, where we were as a team. It's not where we wanted to be. It's just disappointing for me personally, for the team. I know the players feel the same way. We've just got to take it all in stride and finish this season strong."
