JACKSONVILLE – Trevor Lawrence put it simply and succinctly.
"We suck right now," he said.
This was moments after the Jaguars’ 18-13 loss to the Cleveland Browns in the 2024 regular-season home opener at EverBank Stadium Sunday.
"I'm pretty shocked," Lawrence said.
Lawrence, the Jaguars' fourth-year starting quarterback, was discussing an offense that started slow and didn't finish fast enough Sunday. The unit produced one impressive drive – which ended with a four-yard third-quarter touchdown run by running back Travis Etienne Jr. – but managed just one touchdown on four possessions inside the Cleveland 20.
"It's not who we are," Head Coach Doug Pederson said. "Guys, coaches, players work too hard during the week."
Pederson added of the Browns, "That's a good defense – a really good defense. Probably one of the best in the league. If there's a measuring stick, then we didn't measure up very well today. Something we've got to look at.
"There's too much talent, I think. There are signs of it, but just not consistent enough."
Lawrence during an emotional post-game media availability said, "We've got to figure it out."
"We know we've got a good group, we've got good players, and we can be a really good offense, but clearly we're not," he said. "Everybody has to take accountability, look in the mirror and fix it. I've got to play better. I'm the leader of this offense. It's on me.
"The wideouts have to play better, the line has to play better, running backs have to play better, we have to coach better. It's everybody, honestly."
Lawrence added, "We're standing around, we've got to take charge. We're standing around waiting on somebody to make a play. Defense is playing their ass off the last two weeks. If a team doesn't score more than 20 points, we should win every week."
Lawrence and Pederson each discussed mistakes that led to missed opportunities. The Jaguars late in the first half used two timeouts after moving past the Browns 10-yard line. The drive ended with a 22-yard field goal by rookie kicker Cam Little.
"We can't finish in the red zone today, too many mistakes, getting in and out of the huddle, communication wasn't good," Lawrence said. "It's a lot of things. What pisses you off after the game is a lot of it we control. We control it but we're not doing it right. Until we do it right, it's a different story. We know the things we have to work on and we have to find a rhythm as an offense. Too many good players to perform like that, really the last two weeks."
Wide receiver Christian Kirk, asked afterward the biggest issue offensively Sunday, said "communication."
"It goes back to being critical of ourselves, looking ourselves in the mirror and seeing what we can do better," he said.
Added Lawrence, "There are no excuses. You have to perform and you have to be able to adjust. Know the plan. Know the plays that are coming in. If it changes personnel, if whatever changes, we've got to get in faster, we've got to get out of the huddle. We've got to look at it and say, 'Hey, is it me? Am I not communicating good enough in the huddle? Are we not getting our substitutes in fast enough? Are we not listening enough in the huddle? Are we not tight enough? Are we breaking the huddle and asking what we've got?'
"It's on all of us. We all have to look at that and just put emphasis on communication. It's day one stuff. It's simple stuff."
QUOTABLE MOMENTS DURING POSTGAME MEDIA
- Center Mitch Morse: "You hold yourself to a high standard. Everything we've done, we've shot ourselves in the foot. So, what can we do except find an opportunity to be critical, be constructive and then when the opportunity presents itself to put our best foot forward the next time on the field? We have to or we're not doing anyone a service."
- Lawrence: "It's holding yourself and others accountable. We've got to be honest with ourselves, and if you don't like it and if you made a mistake and you don't like people calling it out and talking about it, you need to find a different job because this isn't the one. Things matter. Little details matter. Everyone had a play today, at least one, that they can do their job a lot better. All those plays add up and they affect the game and you end up losing."
NOTABLE CALL OUT: WEEK 2 - CLE vs. JAX
- Jaguars tight end Evan Engram was ruled out of Sunday's game after sustaining a hamstring injury in pregame warmups. Engram, who caught 114 passes for 963 yards and four touchdowns last season, had started 35 consecutive regular-season games since signing with the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent in the 2022 offseason. "It was unfortunate," Pederson said. It was during his warm-up prior to pregame. It was right at the time when we put our inactives in. We didn't have an opportunity to make a change. It's no different if he goes down play one. We still have to go out and play."
