The Jaguars began their fifth training camp today, with rookies and
two veterans doing their conditioning run at Ferrell Fields adjacent to
ALLTEL Stadium. The team begins two-a-day practices on Friday,
with sessions at 8:40 a.m. and 3:20 p.m.
The only player who didn't report was first-round draft choice
Fernando Bryant, a cornerback from Alabama who has yet to sign a
contract. "There hasn't been a lot of progress made in the last day,"
said Jaguars head coach Tom Coughlin. "It's frustrating because
the player wants to be here, and it's frustrating to me. I talked to
Fernando today and told him that we didn't draft him first not to
have him in camp. We
emphasized defense throughout the offseason in the draft and free
agency, but the No. 1 draft pick, a cover corner, is not here, and
that's not what we intended."
Of the conditioning run, Coughlin said, "A few people disappointed
me, but the majority of them did well."
On the first day of his team's fifth training camp, Coughlin added,
"The mental part of the camp will be just as tough as any camp
we've ever had. It'll be just as demanding. There'll be more
attention to detail, more attention paid to assignments and
assignment errors. From the standpoint of the pressure on people to
perform well, it will never let up. That's the mental standpoint. On
the physical side, I've thought long and hard about it and about the
number of practices and reps that we have scheduled, and I think
we have the right approach for this training camp with this team."
