8/19/2006 7:11 PM
(Half hour before kickoff) -- Good evening. These Jaguars won't play tonight: Josh Scobee, Matt Jones, Gerald Sensabaugh, Dan Connolly, Mike Williams, Todd Yoder, Brian Jones and Marcedes Lewis.
8/19/2006 7:16 PM
(Twenty minutes before kickoff) -- Carolina Panthers star wide receiver Steve Smith will not play tonight. He is recovering from a hamstring injury.
8/19/2006 7:42 PM
(Kickoff time) -- Byron Leftwich is the starting quarterback for the Jaguars.
8/19/2006 7:44 PM
(Kickoff) -- Nate Salley returns for Carolina to Panthers 21-yard line. Derrick Wimbush made the tackle.
8/19/2006 7:46 PM
(First down) -- Delhomme complete to Keyshawn Johnson at Panthers 39 on third-down conversion.
8/19/2006 7:48 PM
(First down) -- Delhomme to Drew Carter for first down at Jaguars 49. Brian Williams was in coverage.
8/19/2006 7:49 PM
(Panthers drive into Jaguars territory) -- Carolina is mixing run and pass effectively, but now faces a third-and-seven at the Jaguars 46.
8/19/2006 7:50 PM
(Long completion) -- Jake Delhomme passes 40 yards to Keary Colbert. The ball is at the Jaguars six. Colbert beat Terry Cousin.
8/19/2006 7:53 PM
(22-yard field goal) -- John Kasay converts. Rashean Mathis nearly intercepted on third down. The drive was 75 yards in 12 plays. Carolina leads, 3-0.
8/19/2006 7:54 PM
(Carolina kickoff) -- That's not what the Jaguars defense wanted. They wanted to assert themselves early. Instead, Carolina moved down the field with ease.
8/19/2006 7:58 PM
(Penalty, sack) -- Right away, false start on Mo Williams. On first down, Byron Leftwich is sacked for a 10-yard loss.
8/19/2006 8:01 PM
(Three and out) -- Chris Hanson's punt is returned 17 yards to the Jaguars 45-yard line.
8/19/2006 8:06 PM
(Three and out) -- Jason Baker's punt goes into the end zone. Chad Owens was deep to receive. First down for the Jaguars at their 20-yard line.
8/19/2006 8:07 PM
(Final series for Leftwich?) -- Jack Del Rio had said earlier this week that Byron Leftwich would play two series. That would mean this series will end his night. He needs to move the ball.
8/19/2006 8:09 PM
(Pass to Reggie Williams) -- Leftwich throws a 22-yard strike to Williams at the Jaguars 43.
8/19/2006 8:09 PM
(To Williams, again) -- Leftwich for 13 to Willams on a down and out at the Carolina 44.
8/19/2006 8:11 PM
(Third and one from 35) -- Fred Taylor gains a yard; first down at Carolina 34.
8/19/2006 8:12 PM
(Second and six at 30) -- Greg Jones gains four. He recovered own fumble.
8/19/2006 8:13 PM
(Holding penalty) -- Chris Naeole is flagged. The ball is moved back to the Carolina 39, second and 15.
8/19/2006 8:14 PM
(Third and 13) -- Leftwich is sacked. He was forced to hold the ball because his receivers were covered.
8/19/2006 8:15 PM
(Touchback) -- Hanson punts into the end zone. That's the end of the first quarter.
8/19/2006 8:17 PM
(First quarter analysis) -- The Jaguars defense was not dominant. Carolina's got a nice-looking offense. The big story of the night, of course, is Leftwich. He threw two good-looking passes to Reggie Williams, but the sack that killed the drive left the Jaguars with no points.
8/19/2006 8:20 PM
(Leftwich stats) -- He completed all four of his passing attempts for 52 yards and a 118.8 passer rating. The two sacks spoiled his night.
8/19/2006 8:21 PM
(Third and one at Panthers 45) -- Stopped! Nick Greisen made the hit on rookie DeAngelo Williams.
8/19/2006 8:22 PM
(Punt rolls into the end zone) -- The Jaguars start at their 20-yard line. David Garrard is at quarterback with 12:28 to play in the second quarter.
8/19/2006 8:24 PM
(Second and four) -- Fred Taylor gains six on his best burst of the preseason. He looked quick on that run.
8/19/2006 8:25 PM
(Garrard fumbles snap) -- He recovered.
8/19/2006 8:25 PM
(First down) -- Garrard throws to Cortez Hankton for 10 yards and a first down at the Jaguars 39-yard line.
8/19/2006 8:27 PM
(Interception) -- Garrard overthrew Ernest Wilford and the pass was intercepted by Colin Branch. Carolina has the ball at its 42-yard line.
8/19/2006 8:29 PM
(Both teams continue to play their ones) -- Delhomme is still in the game. So is the Jaguars number one defense. This game has a regular season feel to it so far; much better than last week.
8/19/2006 8:35 PM
(Punt) -- Owens returns Baker's punt seven yards to the Jaguars 24.
8/19/2006 8:36 PM
(7:08 to play in second quarter) -- Garrard needs to make something happen. The interception he threw was the result of a poor decision. At this point in time, Leftwich's status as the team's starting quarterback is safe.
8/19/2006 8:38 PM
(Pass to Wilford) -- Garrard throws a 22-yard strike to Wilford at the Jags 46. That's a good rebound play for Garrard.
8/19/2006 8:38 PM
(To Wilford, again) -- This time for nine yards. First down at Panthers 45.
8/19/2006 8:39 PM
(Powerful run) -- Greg Jones powered his way for seven yards; a very impressive run.
8/19/2006 8:39 PM
(Garrard to Jones-Drew) -- A six-yard pass to Panthers 32; soft-looking pass.
8/19/2006 8:40 PM
(Second and four) -- Jones-Drew gains nothing. Big play for Garrard coming up.
8/19/2006 8:41 PM
(Incomplete) -- Garrard fumbled the shotgun snap, picked up the ball and scrambled to the right. His pass for George Wrighster was a little low but could've been caught; it wasn't.
8/19/2006 8:43 PM
(50-yard field goal) -- Seth Marler cleared the bar with plenty of room to spare. Jags 3, Panthers 3 with 3:18 to play in second quarter. The drive was seven plays, 44 yards.
8/19/2006 8:44 PM
(Analysis) -- Garrard looks tight. There's a lot at stake for him tonight.
8/19/2006 8:45 PM
(Garrard stats) -- He's four of six for 47 yards, one interception and a 50.7 passer rating.
8/19/2006 8:46 PM
(Second team defense in the game) -- But Delhomme and the Panthers first team offense is still in the game.
8/19/2006 8:48 PM
(Goings big-gainer) -- Nick Goings up the middle for 19 yards to Jaguars 41.
8/19/2006 8:49 PM
(Delhomme is dandy) -- This guy's a big-time quarterback. He's in control and the offense moves to his pace. If he cuts down on his interceptions, he's going to move into the elite category of NFL quarterback. Imagine that from a guy who played in NFL Europe.
8/19/2006 8:51 PM
(Just when I praise him) -- Delhomme overthrows his receiver. It would've been a big gain.
8/19/2006 8:53 PM
(Fourth and two at Jags 33) -- Delhomme throws to Johnson for a first down at Jags 23.
8/19/2006 8:55 PM
(Sack) -- Delhomme sacked by Brent Hawkins at Jaguars 29. Hawkins and Brian Iwuh came off the edge together and caught the Panthers by surprise. The Panthers couldn't block them both.
8/19/2006 8:57 PM
(First and goal at one) -- Johnson dropped a touchdown pass but Scott Starks was flagged for interference in the end zone. Thirty-four seconds remain to be played in the half.
8/19/2006 8:59 PM
(Touchdown) -- Goings up the middle at :26 of the first half. The drive is 69 yards in 10 plays. The Panthers lead, 10-3.
8/19/2006 9:02 PM
(Garrard to Pearman) -- Gain of 16 to Jaguars 40. Thirteen seconds remain.
8/19/2006 9:04 PM
(Touchdown Carolina) -- Julius Peppers sacked Garrard and forced a fumble. Michael Rucker picked up the ball and ran 31 yards for a touchdown. Panthers lead, 17-3.
8/19/2006 9:06 PM
(Halftime analysis) -- The first time Leftwich was sacked, there were boos; significant boos. It gave me the feeling a lot of fans were here to see a change at quarterback. Based on what happened in the first half, that is clearly not going to happen.
8/19/2006 9:22 PM
(Jaguars ones still in) -- Garrard and LaBrandon Toefield are in the game, but everybody else is a starter.
8/19/2006 9:26 PM
(Garrard to Williams) -- A slant for 19 yards at the Carolina 30. Williams is having a great night. He's caught three for 54 yards. Is this his coming-out party? He's the best thing the Jaguars got going for them tonight.
8/19/2006 9:27 PM
(On the move) -- Garrard has the Jaguars at the Panthers 19 with that pass to George Wrighster. The Panthers have their second team defense in the game.
8/19/2006 9:28 PM
(Interception) -- Garrard's pass in the end zone for Wilford is picked off by Richard Marshall. Garrard's passer rating is now 48.1.
8/19/2006 9:29 PM
(Chris Weinke is in at quarterback) -- Delhomme finished with 10 of 18 for 129 yards and a 78.2 passer rating.
8/19/2006 9:34 PM
(7:14 to play in third quarter) -- Quinn Gray is in the game.
8/19/2006 9:36 PM
(What was that?) -- Gray overthrew his receiver; he missed an open guy in the flat.
8/19/2006 9:42 PM
(Punt return) -- Jones-Drew returns nine yards to the Jaguars 19. The rookie is catching them cleanly.
8/19/2006 9:47 PM
(Three and out) -- Gray is not off to a very good start. If this stays the way it is, this will have been a very disappointing night for the Jaguars. Concerns about the offense will grow.
8/19/2006 9:48 PM
(Attendance) -- Tickets distributed for tonight's game: 64,073.
8/19/2006 9:54 PM
(Punt return by Pearman) -- Alvin Pearman went the distance but a holding penalty on Rich Alexis brought it back. It would've been a 77-yard touchdown.
8/19/2006 9:57 PM
(End of the third quarter) -- Carolina leads, 17-3, and both teams are deep into their reserves. Evaluation will be based mostly on what occurred in the first half and it will not favor the Jaguars. Next week's game against Tampa Bay increases in importance. The first team offense will be under the microscope.
8/19/2006 10:02 PM
(First and goal at the Carolina eight) -- Illegal procedure pushes the ball back to the 13.
8/19/2006 10:04 PM
(Touchdown) -- Gray to Greg Estandia for 10 yards and a touchdown with 10:16 to play in the game. Carolina 17, Jaguars 10.
8/19/2006 10:16 PM
(Ball goes over) -- Jaguars hold on fourth-and-inches. The Jaguars have the ball at their 36 with 7:16 to play.
8/19/2006 10:30 PM
(One more try) -- The Jaguars have it at their 20-yard line with 3:10 to play.
8/19/2006 10:37 PM
(Gray has them on the move) -- At the Carolina 32 with 1:10 to play.
8/19/2006 10:39 PM
(Almost a touchdown) -- Gray had Charles Sharon open in the end zone but overthrew him. Fourth down.
8/19/2006 10:41 PM
(Incomplete) -- That's all. Carolina 17, Jaguars 10.
