Jacksonville Jaguars special teams coordinator Frank Gansz is retiring after 37 seasons of coaching, including the last 24 in the NFL. Gansz spent the 2000 and 2001 seasons with the Jaguars, whom he joined from the St. Louis Rams following the Rams' victory in Super Bowl XXXIV at the end of the 1999 season.

Jaguars head coach Tom Coughlin has named John Bonamego to succeed Gansz as special teams coordinator. Bonamego, 38, has been the Jaguars' assistant special teams coach for the past three seasons.

"Frank Gansz leaves the game as one of the best special teams coaches in football," Coughlin said. "He has long had a reputation as an excellent teacher and communicator, and I appreciate the energy and professionalism he brought with him when he joined our staff two years ago. He has been a great asset for us, and I wish him an enjoyable retirement, which he has certainly earned."

Gansz spent the first 13 seasons of his coaching career at the college level before moving to the NFL in 1978 with the San Francisco 49ers. His 24 years in the NFL included two seasons as the Kansas City Chiefs head coach in 1987-88.

"I appreciate the opportunity that Tom Coughlin gave me," Gansz said. "Tom is an outstanding person and an excellent football coach. I enjoyed my time there – the players, the Jacksonville area, and the whole program. But it's time for me to step away from football."

Bonamego joined the Jaguars staff in 1999 following six years on the coaching staff at Army. He is entering his 17th season of coaching, including 11 collegiate campaigns.

"John Bonamego has benefited greatly from his three years here, and in particular the last two seasons working with Frank," Coughlin said. "John is well-prepared to take over the responsibility of our special teams and I'm confident that we will have success with him."

"John is ready for the job and will do an outstanding job for the Jaguars," Gansz added. "I recommended to Tom that he take over upon my retirement."
