Defensive Aggression Shines and Offense Finds Rhythm | Campservations Day 3

0726 Day 3 Campservations

JACKSONVILLE – Jaguars 2024 Training Camp continued Friday.

It was the third day of the third training camp under Head Coach Doug Pederson, featuring a practice with helmets and shells at the Miller Electric Center. Each day throughout camp, members of Jaguars Media – senior writer John Oehser, senior reporter/editor J.P. Shadrick and team reporter Kainani Stevens – will share an observation.

Here are Friday's "campservations:"

One day becomes the next – and one day isn't too discernable from the rest. That's the nature of non-padded football practice – and while that's therefore the nature of early NFL training camp practices these days, a few thoughts stood out on Day 3 of Jaguars '24 camp Friday. One is that the defense indeed seems quick and aggressive early in camp, something that was expected considering defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen's aggressive/attacking style. The unit on Friday continued to make plays and create turnovers, with a highlight coming when defensive lineman Jeremiah Ledbetter returned an interception off backup quarterback Mac Jones for a "touchdown." Another thought is that a lot of early "angst" over quarterback Trevor Lawrence's first two days was overblown. The offense "struggled" with turnovers when working in the cramped quarters of the red zone on Days 1 and 2, with no such issues while working full-field drills on Friday. A final Friday thought is these early camp practices live up to their billing as "acclimation" and "ramp-up" work. The NFL mandates these early days be about ensuring players risk as little injury as possible before the more intense padded practices begin. That means these practices feel more like offseason organized team activities than "old-school" training camp practices. They're still warming up. The pads go on next week. No more ramping then.

It was Day 3 of the camp ramp-up period, and it felt like the defense had another good day Friday. In the final 11-on-11 period, Lawrence connected on throws over the middle to tight end Evan Engram and wide receiver Christian Kirk. The practice was attended exclusively by season-ticket members, who were treated to a visit from Lawrence and defensive end Josh Hines-Allen after practice to thank them for attending and their support of the team. One more practice is on the schedule for Saturday and the team has Sunday off before getting into pads next week.

Day 3 featured one-on-one drills for the first time of '24 camp and the competition was palpable, specifically between the receivers and the defensive backs. I continue to be impressed by the work the secondary has done during this first week of camp. The offense looked a bit more locked in Friday during 11-on-11 drills. Lawrence fell back on his chemistry with Kirk and Engram to see some success. Engram addressed his progress after practice, saying he is looking forward to being more of a vertical threat in the offense this season. Two ankle injuries in the secondary to keep an eye on going forward. Rookie cornerback Jarrian Jones and veteran cornerback Tyson Campbell both missed some reps due to ankle injuries. It will be worth following to see if either lingers into the weekend.
