Camp Snapshot: Press Taylor Praises Early Intensity and Adaptation

0726 Camp Snapshot

JACKSONVILLE – Press Taylor likes the overall early feel.

We're three days into Jaguars 2024 Training Camp, which means being in the acclimation and ramp-up period – which means focusing on the big picture.

And the Jaguars' offensive coordinator sees positives in that picture.

"Overall as a unit, and as a team, it feels very intense," Taylor said.

Taylor spoke to the media Friday morning before a two-hour Day 3 practice in temperatures in the 80s at the Miller Electric Center. The practice featured helmets and shells, with the first practice in pads scheduled for Tuesday.

"Guys understand very clearly what we're trying to communicate, what we're trying to get done, and guys have carried that over to the practice field," Taylor said.

Taylor also on Friday discussed the first two days of '24 camp, with the offense committing three turnovers each day while working mostly in red-zone situations. Safety Andrew Wingard intercepted quarterback Trevor Lawrence twice on similar plays Thursday.

"Space is restricted," Taylor said of red-zone work. "Things happen very fast. The install is still very small. … There's a give and take within every rep. We don't put the most value on scripted practices and things we're doing. Both sides of the ball understand we're trying to get something accomplished with this period. We continue to build these tapes as we teach.

"Through the course of the season, you're going to get caught at times where something was different than you expected. You have to be able do the right thing with football. You have to be able to adjust your route accordingly. Those are the situations we want our guys to see right now as we continue to build this thing out."

The Jaguars worked full-field seven-on-seven and team drills on Day 3 after emphasizing red-zone work on the first two days of '24 camp practices. Taylor said the Jaguars in previous camps worked on installing first-, second- and third-down situations on the first two days of camp.

"It's different than we've normally done," Taylor said, adding that the change was to reduce wear on players' legs and allow them to acclimate to the flow of camp. "It's more for the players. I think they appreciate that."

Taylor added, "Everybody's getting used to the speed of the red zone particularly. When you start there, it makes it tough at times for the condensed space, the way things happen. So those are things that we haven't necessarily gotten to at this point in time. It's about putting in concepts that we think will help us down the road, not necessarily are they going to win a rep today."

Here's a look at Friday's Practice:

PLAY OF THE DAY

While the offense moved efficiently at times with multiple big plays in full-field work Friday, the play of the day perhaps came from defensive tackle Jeremiah Ledbetter. Backup quarterback Mac Jones threw to fourth-year wide receiver Austin Trammell, who reached high for the pass. Ledbetter caught the deflected pass and returned it down the sideline for a touchdown.

STANDING OUT

  • Safety Andre Cisco had a pass breakup on a sideline pass from Lawrence to tight end Evan Engram, with Lawrence also completing two other crossing routes to Engram. …
  • Lawrence threw touchdowns on deep crossing routes to Engram and wide receiver Christian Kirk in 11-on-11 work. …
  • Veteran wide receiver Denzel Mims caught a perfect deep pass from Jones for a touchdown in team drills early in practice. …
  • Rookie running back Lorenzo Lingard had a nice run down the sideline in 11-on-11 drills. …
