Davis on Track for Preseason Debut: Jaguars WR Shows Positive Progress After Injury

0805 Camp Day 11

JACKSONVILLE – He's progressing nicely.

And if the progression was at first delayed a bit, Gabe Davis on Monday said the process is moving at an acceptable pace as Jaguars 2024 Training Camp continues.

Cohesion with quarterback Trevor Lawrence is on schedule, and that's a positive.

"We'll continue to work, continue to keep trying to build that chemistry each and every day," he said.

Davis, a wide receiver who signed with the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent in March, spoke to the media following Day 11 practice at the Miller Electric Center. The veteran has worked his way back from a knee issue – and Head Coach Doug Pederson on Monday said Davis could play against the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2024 preseason opener at EverBank Stadium Saturday.

"He's now starting to kind of feel a little bit better each day," Pederson said. "I plan on him playing some, getting him out there, but a fine line with that because we want to make sure he's healthy the entire season."

Davis, who spent his first four NFL seasons with the Buffalo Bills, missed much of the offseason program returning from a knee injury sustained in the 2024 regular-season finale in January. He participated late in organized team activities, then has worked full during much of '24 camp.

"He's done some really good things in practice," Pederson said. "He's showing us enough. He's one of those veteran guys that you don't really need to see a ton in preseason games. At the same time, I think it'd be good for him to get out there with his guys, especially this first one, a home game and all that, and feel that experience."

Davis said he "for sure" will be ready to play Saturday.

"I feel pretty good," he said. "I did everything today, all team reps. That last 12-, 15-play drive I was in there the whole time. It felt good, so the body's feeling great."

Davis said balancing the desire to begin working extensively with new teammates with returning at the proper pace was difficult at times.

"You fight with it sometimes because you're a new player on a new team, and you're trying to prove yourself the guys that you're going to be playing with that you're tough, that you can make plays, that you can be dependable, that they can trust you," he said. "So when you are going through some of those aches and pains, you just kind of have to fight through it mentally. You want to be able to show these guys these guys that you have their backs and you're willing to do whatever it takes to be successful."

Davis called his work and relationship with the Jaguars' receivers, a group that features veteran wide receiver Christian Kirk and tight end Evan Engram, "great."

"It's awesome being in this room," he said. "I love all the guys in there."

He also said his relationship with Lawrence continues to grow.

"I feel like we got our slants down pat," Davis said. "He hits me where I want them every single time. They're real successful. We'll just keep going and trying to get on the same page."

Davis added, "We have to put the time in. Me and Trevor are just starting to throw together this year. You have to build that chemistry and put in the extra time if you want to win."

NOTABLE MOMENTS FROM JAGUARS TRAINING CAMP - DAY 11

Pederson on Monday praised the progress during '24 camp of nose tackle DaVon Hamilton. A fifth-year veteran, Hamilton played just eight games last season after a preseason back issue. He has practiced full throughout camp, impressing with his power and quickness. "He has great," Pederson said. "It's been exciting for me just to see him back out. He's healthy and playing well. I've been really pleased with where he's at and he continues to improve."

QUOTABLE MOMENTS FROM JAGUARS TRAINING CAMP - DAY 11

Pederson on rookie kicker Cam Little, who now is the only kicker in camp and who has been consistent from all ranges since camp began: "It's still early. We have a lot of football ahead, but he's done a nice job to date. He has done a great job. I think we want to be careful with him. We don't want to over-kick him, but at the same time, put him in situations where he maybe feels a little more pressure. Hopefully in these games coming up, he'll get a chance to do that."
