16x9-BREAKINGDOWNTHEROSTER

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars on Tuesday reduced their roster to 53 players.

The roster breakdown as of Tuesday at 12:45 p.m.: 24 offensive players, 26 defensive players, a punter, a kicker and a long snapper.

The Jaguars waived 13 players and released nine Tuesday, with one waived/injured, one released via injury settlement, two placed on injured reserve and one placed on reserve/suspended. The Jaguars waived six players Sunday and released four others.

NFL teams had until Tuesday at 4 p.m. to reduce rosters to the 53-player regular-season limit. Sixteen players may be on the practice squad – 17 if one is an International Pathway Program player – with six of those players allowed to be veterans of any experience

A position-by-position look at the Jaguars' 53-man roster as of Tuesday at 12:45 p.m.

Quarterbacks (2)

Projected Starter: Trevor Lawrence (fourth NFL season).

Others on Roster: Mac Jones (fourth).

  • The Jaguars appear strong and stable here, with Lawrence – the No. 1 selection in the 2021 NFL Draft – the clear starter after signing a long-term contract extension in the offseason. Jones, the No. 15 overall selection in the '21 draft by the New England Patriots and a starter with the Patriots the past three seasons, enters the season as Lawrence's backup after a strong preseason and training camp. The Jaguars on Tuesday released via injury settlement C.J. Beathard, Lawrence's backup the past three seasons.

Running Backs (3)

Projected Starter: Travis Etienne Jr. (fourth NFL season).

Others on Roster: Tank Bigsby (second), D'Ernest Johnson (sixth).

Injured Reserve: Keilan Robinson (rookie).

  • This has the feel of a strong, deep, improved position. Etienne, a starter the last two seasons, rushed for 1,008 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2023 and has improved as a receiver enough that he figures to be a significant receiving option for Lawrence. Bigsby, a third-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, had a strong preseason and training camp after struggling at times as a rookie. Johnson is a solid, versatile veteran who will enter his second season with the Jaguars. The Jaguars on Tuesday waived rookie free agents Gary Brightwell and Jalen Jackson.

Wide Receivers (6)

Projected Starters: Christian Kirk (seventh NFL season), Gabe Davis (fifth), Brian Thomas Jr. (rookie).

Others on Roster: Tim Jones (third), Parker Washington (second), Devin Duvernay (fifth).

  • This feels like another strong position after the Jaguars made significant offseason changes. Kirk, entering his third season with the team, caught 57 passes for 787 yards and three touchdowns in 2023 before missing the final five games of the season with a core muscle injury. Davis, who signed as an unrestricted free agent from the Buffalo Bills, figures to add a big-play, deep-threat element the Jaguars lacked at times last season. Thomas, the No. 23 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft, also figures to add a big-play element and a big-body threat in the red zone. Davis and Thomas each turned in strong preseasons and training camps, with Washington emerging as one of the team's top preseason storylines and looking dramatically improved after playing sparingly until late in his rookie season. Jones is one of the team's top special teams players and Duvernay – signed as an unrestricted free agent from the Baltimore Ravens in the offseason – is one of the NFL's top returners. The Jaguars on Tuesday waived veterans Elijah Cooks and Austin Trammell and rookie Joshua Cephus.

Tight Ends (3)

Projected Starter(S): Evan Engram (eighth NFL season), Luke Farrell (fourth).

Others on Roster: Brenton Strange (second).

  • This was a relatively stable position in the offseason – and appears to be a deep, productive spot on the roster. Engram finished two receptions short of the single-season receptions record last season when he caught 114 passes for 963 yards and four touchdowns. He had a strong preseason and is focused on improving as a downfield threat. Farrell continues to be one of the under appreciated players on the roster, having developed into a reliable blocker and overlooked receiver. Strange, a second-round selection in the 2023 draft, had a solid preseason and could develop as a receiver in his second season. The Jaguars released veteran Josiah Deguara after signing him as an unrestricted free agent from the Green Bay Packers in the offseason and waived Shawn Bowman.

Offensive Linemen (10)

Projected Starters: Left tackle Cam Robinson (eighth NFL season), left guard Ezra Cleveland (fifth), center Mitch Morse (tenth), right guard Brandon Scherff (tenth), right tackle Anton Harrison (second).

Others on Roster: Cooper Hodges (second), Walker Little (fourth), Luke Fortner (three), Cole Van Lanen (three), Javon Foster (rookie).

  • This was one of the more intriguing positions entering the final weekend of the preseason, with decisions made on the depth behind the starting five. That starting five is an experienced group that was reworked in the offseason when the team signed Morse as a free agent from the Buffalo Bills. The Jaguars also re-signed Cleveland in the offseason after acquiring him in a trade from the Minnesota Vikings last season. Harrison, the No. 27 overall selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, was one of the standouts of 2024 Training Camp after an encouraging rookie season. Robinson is the Jaguars' most-tenured starter, with Scherff having played through injuries during much of two seasons with the Jaguars. The Jaguars' depth is experienced, with Little having started at guard and tackle in three seasons and Fortner starting his first two seasons at center. A player to watch: Hodges, a potential future starter who missed his rookie season with a knee injury. Another to watch: Van Lanen, a third-year veteran who impressed with a strong training camp and preseason. "Cole has had a really good training camp," Head Coach Doug Pederson said. "He has earned a spot."
  • The Jaguars released long-time veteran Tyler Shatley, the team's most-tenured player entering training camp, as well as rookie Steven Jones and veterans Darryl Williams and Blake Hance. "He had a really good run here. Is that run over? That remains to be seen," General Manager Trent Baalke said of Shatley, who spent the past 10 seasons with the Jaguars after signing with them as an undrafted free agent in 2014. "It's hard to stay this league a year, much less 10. Hats off to him and what he's accomplished. Never say never."

Defensive Ends (4)

Projected Starters: Josh Hines-Allen (sixth NFL season), Travon Walker (third).

Others on Roster: Arik Armstead (tenth), Myles Cole (rookie).

  • This could be the strongest area on the roster – enough so that it could be the key to a revamped defense. Hines-Allen set a franchise record with 17.5 sacks last season, and he and Walker (10 sacks) led the league in sacks as a tandem with 27.5. Armstead, a perennial front-line player for the San Francisco 49ers in nine previous seasons, can – like Walker – play multiple positions across the line and gives the Jaguars a trio of impact, difference-making players at the position. The Jaguars surprised observers by trading veteran Trevis Gipson to the Seattle Seahawks Monday, with Otomewo and Cole making the roster after strong camp and preseasons. The Jaguars also waived D.J. Coleman Tuesday and released Joe Gaziano. “We feel good about the group,” Baalke said of the ends. "We feel good about that rotation. We've got some guys on the inside who can flex outside. There's some flexibility with the way the roster was constructed."

Defensive Tackles (7)

Projected Starters: DaVon Hamilton (fifth NFL season), Roy Robertson-Harris (eighth).

Others on Roster: Maason Smith (rookie), Jordan Jefferson (rookie), Tyler Lacy (second), Jeremiah Ledbetter (eight), Esezi Otomewo (third).

  • This also feels like a revamped, improved position – in large part because Hamilton appears fully recovered from a back issue that kept him out early in 2024 and hampered him thereafter. Robertson-Harris gives the Jaguars another big, disruptive body and Smith – a second-round selection in the '24 draft – had flashes during '24 preseason of his dominant potential. Ledbetter has proven a strong, veteran presence in three seasons with the team and Jefferson and Lacy give the Jaguars a young, ascending duo here.

Linebackers (6)

Projected Starters: Foye Oluokun (seventh NFL season), Devin Lloyd (third).

Others on Roster: Chad Muma (third), Yasir Abdullah (second), Ventrell Miller (second), Caleb Johnson (fourth).

  • This has taken on the look of one of the Jaguars' more intriguing position groups in '24 camp and preseason. While the Jaguars didn't officially announce linebacker positions, Oluokun appears to be playing extensively at weak-side linebacker with Lloyd working at middle linebacker. Each could play both positions. Muma and Miller also were major camp storylines, with Muma flourishing in defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen's attacking, aggressive defense and Miller emerging as a potential long-term starter/front-line player as he stood out throughout camp and preseason. Johnson remains one of the team's top special teams players, with Abdullah – like Miller – strong in training camp and preseason.

Cornerbacks (5)

Projected Starters: Tyson Campbell (fourth NFL season), Ronald Darby (tenth).

Others on the Roster: Jarrian Jones (rookie), De'Antre Prince (rookie), Montaric Brown (third).

  • This is another revamped area, with the Jaguars readdressing the area to fit Nielsen's attacking, man-coverage based defense. Campbell signed a long-term contract extension shortly before '24 camp began and appears to fit Nielsen's scheme – as does Darby, a veteran who has excelled in man coverage on the outside throughout his nine-year NFL career. Players to watch at this position are a young group of talented, unproven corners such as Jones and Prince with Brown playing extensively last season when Campbell was injured. "We felt comfortable with some of our young players and the development we had," Pederson said. The Jaguars waived Christian Braswell, a seventh-round selection in the '23 draft, on Tuesday – and released veterans Tre Flowers and Amani Oruwariye. They also waived 2023 sixth-round selection Erick Hallett II.

Safeties (4)

Projected Starters: Andre Cisco (fourth NFL season), Darnell Savage (sixth).

Others on Roster: Daniel Thomas (fifth), Antonio Johnson (second).

Injured Reserve: Andrew Wingard (sixth).

  • This is another revamped position – and it could remain something of a hybrid into the season. Cisco, a ball-hawking safety with a knack for forcing turnovers, is one starter and Savage figures to play extensively as a nickel safety with corner skills. Also figuring to contribute extensively: Johnson, who flashed impressive playmaking skills given the opportunity late in his rookie season. The Jaguars waived Josh Proctor Tuesday and released veterans Adrian Amos and Terrell Edmunds.

Specialists (3)

Kicker Cam Little (rookie), punter Logan Cooke (seventh), long snapper Ross Matiscik (fifth).

  • The Jaguars appear strong here, with Cooke long having been among the NFL's best and most consistent punters. Matiscik earned first-team Associated Press All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors last season, with Little – a sixth-round selection in the 2024 NFL Draft – impressing with his strong leg and accuracy throughout '24 preseason and training camp.
